View Full Version : Dumbest thing you've ever done while working on your bike

I saw this on another forum and got some pretty hard laughs.
Lets try and keep from insulting people over their mistakes, I know we have all had them.

I guess I'll start then.

One time I forgot to tighten my carrier after putting a new chain on and the carrier rotated and threw my chain about 50 feet from the truck:mad:

Another time, I was reassembling my xr motor, and got it installed only to realize I didnt put the cam chain guide back in, the night before I left for Dunefest this summer. That was a fun night, full of sleep.

Two days later, I was taking apart my dad's ds650 in our trailer cuz it was running like crap at Dunefest, and I took the seat off and noticed that the air filter wasn't on:eek2:

And of course, like any dune rider, I have put my paddles on backwards....a few times

Those are just a few of many, but I want to see what other people have done

my old 400ex, i had an hmf and a k@n with outerwear. for months it ran bad and cut out. tried rejetting it over and over, changing the needle setting, cleaning the carb and airbox

took the outerwear off the k@n.....ran perfect

Shawn can vouch for this one. I spent like an hour beating the hell out of my steering stem bushing trying to get it out. Finally decided to turn the frame over and try to knock it out from the bottom. Barely touched it and it came right out. Definitely a FML moment because I absolutely demolished the thing from hitting it with a hammer for so long.

sprayed the carb and the spray well sprayed when it hit and I had carb cleaner in my eyes. Burned so bad!

Tried to flush out the radiator faster by putting my mouth over the hole where the cap is and blowing, mouth full of coolant, tasted absolutely terrible.

Snapped the bolts for the case a few times and had to remove the case and extract them and buy new gaskets.

You know that little plastic funnel shaped thing that goes around the jet? Jetted the carb, reassembled it, put the plastics back on and saw it laying there. Whoops lol had to tear it all back down to put the piece in.

nothing to major for me.
put a wheel on the wrong way one time valve stem was facing in. rode it like that for 15 minutes then noticed.

shimmed the vlaves on my ltr and never put those lttle bucket things that go over the valves back in lucky i didnt try and start it before seeing them. any one with a ltr knows how many freaking gas hoses and bull chit ypu have to go threw to get the gas tank off:mad:

and stripped out my axle nut by over tighting it didnt think it was possiable:rolleyes:

and tightend my wheels on so tight one time a impact gun couldnt get them off and had to use a braker bar:mad: messed up the lugs a little bit

my first time adjusting the chain on my 05 YFZ, I forgot to tighten the bolts on the side that hold the carrier. My dad had always done it and was telling me how to do it step by step, he just walked away before telling me to retighten those two bolts. I should have realized, but oh well. Live and learn. It lasted the morning practice and the first 4 lap moto, but threw the chain on the holeshot of the second moto(2008 season). The adjusters on the carrier spread out and pushed past the flanges on the swingarm, taking a little chunk out of them. I bent that swingarm in a crash at the beginning of this season, so it was finally replaced when the left side of the carrier finally snapped off in practice toward the end of this past season. Luckily I was able to swap over the whole rear end from my 08 YFZ in order to race the day after the carrier failed.

i installed a new battery and tried starting it.. the starter just spun. i thought i sheared the flywheel key, so i tore off the left side case. the key was fine, so i thought somehow the starter clutch blew.. that was fine too. after an hour or two of scratching my head, i realized i put the battery in backwards, so the poles were reversed and the starter was spinning backwards... :o :p

I put a gear in a 250ex trans this week. I put the cam on the 350 mark instead of the 250 mark.... For anyone that's had a 250ex apart, it is the biggest pain in the *** to get to the cam. Also, the thing I happen to do the most is forget to put the sleeve back into carriers after replacing bearings.

That sucks. Been there done that. Ditto on the muffler plug. My latest was replacing a ball joint. Couldnt get the stupid thing out of the spindle. Gave it a shot of PB Blaster, walked away for a min, gave it a TAP and it popped out like butter.

Forgot to hook up the TPS wires on my 450 after having the carb off.

Forgot to tighten the carb boot after jetting the carb one time. It ran aweome til the carb shifted and developed an air leak. Didn't find it as soon as I should have either.

put a 400ex all back together after a complete rebuild except for chain. Fired it up and all. All that was left was to install the chain and do a test ride. When I went to install the chain, I realized I put the spacers backwards on the engine thus it was offset to the right. Of course, the swingarm spacers were backwards too. :grr:

Put a new clutch basket in with out the lock washer or w/e. Bolt came loose and basket caught the inside of the engine case and snapped the basket.

Opened my gas cap to see how much gas I had. It was dark and I couldn't see so I used a lighter to. Lucky the fumes didnt catch fire. :eek2:

Didn't tighten the lug nuts on one my rear tires good enough and came loose and ovaled out the stud holes wrecking the rim.

Just 2 weeks ago forgot to tighten a tie rod and rear break caliper. Caliper came off. Saw the tie rod was loose the bolt was bairly holding it on still.

I bought a new rotor and sprocket because i thought they were bent for some reason because they shook like crazy. Got the whole thing apart and realized my carrier was bad.

So then I was taking out my carrier because the bearings were shot. Got to the lock nut on the axle and took out one thread lock and not the other. Well i got the axle nut halfway out when i started seeing threads coming out.
It was basically a big night of fail.

I also had a buddy rebuild his entire top end because he couldn't get the z400 to run at all. After rebuilding the whole motor it still didnt run at all. So he took off his seat and found a sock covering his airbox. He put it there because he thought it would get better filtration haha

One time I was tightening the lug nuts on my bike. On the last one, I jerked the impact off, set it down, took off and rode. I rode for about 4 hours with a socket and 3/8 to 1/2 inch adapter stuck to a rear lug nut. Stayed on the whole ride. Then I spent 2 hours looking around the garage for the adapter and socket as I thought I might have kicked them on the floor or something. :ermm:

When I had my Suzuki LT250r i went to fire it up and nothing ... no spark... so I changed out the plug and put a new one in it.. still no spark. I went to the Suzuki dealership .. spent over $100 on a manual ... bought an ignition coil for over $150 ... waited 3 weeks for it to arrive.. installed it and still no spark. My dad was livid after kicking over the bike for 20 minutes and went into the house. I decided " f'k it I'm trying another spark plug " I installed another plug .. first kick she fired up.

Listen learned ... always try 2 different plugs when you have no spark ... because you might get a plug that's a dud from the factory.

Another time , with my YFZ 450 ... after installing the Sparks exhaust I went to fire up the engine in the garage . It turned over and over and over but wouldn't fire . Then I realized I hadn't connected my tether to the kill switch . Well once I connected it and hit the start button ... it was like someone fired off a shotgun right beside my head. I guess I had flooded the cylinder so bad that once that spark hit the fuel it exploded. Other than ringing in my ears for a day , I didn't break anything on the bike.

For those of you LTR owners, I put my engine with a new $275 piston, back in my quad the night before a ride.... rode for about 2 hrs and then in a wide open section of the track that was 5th gear pinned for about 10 seconds, my motor locks up. I look down and see oil all over my left boot, nerfbar and chain. I had not tightened the bolt that holds the bottom oil line fittting on... goodbye new top end and crank.... fail:grr:

I was rebuilding my KTM last year. Trying to get the steering stem bearing out. After beating on it with a hammer and punch for about an hour decided to try an impact bearing press, still wouldn't work. Tried hitting the top of the bearing with a couple of spot weilds, to shrink the metal a bit, and repeated the steps above. Turned the frame upside down, went to hit the bearing with a few more weilds.......Found the circlip.

Then next day...........bought a manual.

Rebuilt my wifes old blaster (first time ever rebuilding a motor) and went to change the tranny oil. On the case it says 600cm3 (if I remmeber right) Thought that ment how much tranny oil to put in. Well, it was just a little bit too much. Powerband would not kick in, thought it just needed breakin in. Come to find out the reason it blew up in the first place was because I had changed the tranny oil and over filled it. So after the rebuild, My dumbass did the same thing again. 2 Blown motors in a week. So, went to go rebuild again, dropped the case off the work bench and cracked.

well last spring when rebuilding the yfz pinched off vent hoses by over clamping them i was a lil too carefull in which i blew a head and base gasket. i have stripped a few bolts and frame holes here and there. put on a clutch cable backwards without realizing it. always manage to but on the rear sprocket on the wrong side of the hub...for some reason i visualize it the wrong way oh well glad i or someone else picks it up after i do it.

ended up, i used .4 and .8 mm feeler gauges instead of .04 and .08.

I've done a lot of the little things you guys were talking about.

Probably one of the biggest ones was leaving 5-10 tools inside of the air boot. Don't ask me how or why

Not really bike related, but a few years back I was told to go out and move a truck. It had just snowed, and the truck was a 2wd with very bad tires. I went over a small hill and got stuck. After pushing and spinning for 5-10 minutes, I heard a really weird knocking sound. I popped the hood and got burned in the face with steam, and then realized that someone had taked the radiator out to replace it and didn't tell me. Bye bye headgaskets and water pump

also installed lug nuts wrong a few times oh well things happen. before i started doing bolt on work a buddy of mine pounded the axle in without a block of wood and hit the axle end head on mushrooming the end of the axle before this happened got the same guy to doa snowmobile repair and aclutch adjustments for a drag race he said when he pulled the clutch off (secondary) it shattered after seeing him do this to my axle i figured he took a hammer and beat it to death to get it off... lesson learned from the expeirence you use a block of wood or a rubber mallet

Destroyed the cam seats because i didn't check my valves, also destroying the cams to. Bought a new head, thought for some reason that the old cams would work in a new head also that the old valves would seat to a new head. Ran for about 3 hours then quite, valves didn't seat lost compression, also destroyed a new head. Felt like an idiot and my bank was hit hard. Bought new head new valves new springs new cams. 1900$ later i think i finally got it right.

i had an lt250r awhile back, i took it riding and didnt know what jetting was at the time, and put a hole in the piston. completely rebuilt it, put it all back together and fired it up and it felt like i was riding a jackhammer. took the clutch cover off and i didnt line up the counter balancer.

also installed a +6 key in my old 400EX, rode it for about 20 minutes and it stalled and wouldnt start back. pushed it into the garage and turns out i forgot to tighten up the flywheel bolt. sheared the key and had to wait another week to ride.

Rebuilt my 400ex engine with a full 440 race setup. 12:1 race gas only, nice cam with CRF450 cam chain, headstuds, new clutch basket and clutch, full LRD exhaust. Ran (and finished) a 60 mile enduro only to have it start knocking and blowing smoke on a trail ride later that day.

I just thought of another. I put on a new chain, took it for a spin. Came back to the garage and chain was way loose. I took it off and took a link out thinking that it had just stretched a bit. Put it back on the fourwheeler only to realize that I forgot to tighten carrier bolts. and it had spun foward making the chain loose. So then I had a chain with 15 minutes of ride time on it that was now a link too short to work.

so i went home to break it in, got it broken in, then went to change the oil

ive changed the oil in my race 450r hundreds of times so i actually know what i am doing

was riding it and heard a grinding noise, i thought it was the skidplates, then it locked up for a couple seconds then kept goin , all in all i rode for a half hour like that

turns out i got distracted while changing oil and put all the oil in the engine side, engine and tranny oil, so now i have the whole motor torn down and ordered 500 dollars worth of parts... not including labor

we went out riding on a cold day. after letting the bikes warm up i shut of the chokes. my brother hopped on and turned his choke back on thinking he was shutting the thing off. we rode for like 5 miles and he thought his carb was out of tune. he attempted to fix it to little success. after 5 mins w went over, shut the choke off, fixed the carb, and made him look like an idiot

This has happened more then once.........Sold a quad to a customer that we put together, ran good when he took it, calls a few days later bit*hing that the bike won't start, of coarse we said bring it back we will take a look. He drives over half an hour, we unload put gas in it and it fires right up. problem solved.

Also Jeff was working on removing a 400ex swingarm bolt, and we all know they like to seize up. He was hitting it really hard with a hammer, the hammer bounced so hard it hit him in the kneecap, thought he was gonna cry. ended up using a air hammer and alot of muscle to remove it.

i was taking the motor out of my ltr and one of the front motor mount bolts were tight and needed some persuading. I ended up putting a screwdriver in the lower oil line hole and hit it with a deadblow and got the Fer stuck.......took the clutch cover side case off to check and ripped the side gasket:p oh well live and learn

probably other things im sure about that

Rebuilt my banshee when I first got it. I never knew much about carbs, none the less twin carbs.

While the motor was apart, I jetted the carbs for the pipes. When I finally got the whole quad ready to fire up, I could NOT figure out why it didn't run worth a crap. Re-jetted it multiple times, adjusted the needles, changed reeds, the whole shabang.

When on this one forum and asked whats up.. and well I had the slides on the wrong sides. They were reversed, so the cut out in the slide was facing the motor instead of the intake.

It took me a month to figure it out. FML:ermm:

I thought my rings were bad so i put a new piston rings and went ahead and replace my valves and springs and it ended up only being my float in my carb was stuck. That was def a bad week but oh well stuff happens. And you learn as you go

But the good thing is it was still laying on the back of my motor. i felt like a DA:p

busted a motor case on my 250r because i didnt line up the dowels on my clutch cover right. Also this was going to be the first time i ever rode it so i had to wait and buy another case 1/2 when one came up for a decent price.

Not my quad but the powerwasher. Oil came out of the muffler. Tore it all apart. called for the gasket kit & she informs me that maybe it just tipped a little - no need to redo it. To late - its still apart & bought another. Ask to kid to take it to his shop class in school. To much trouble for him I guess. Well its up to me............... just like it always is. ;)

We were camped straight in front of banshee hill, on the other side of the trees, toward the road. I mainly rode at banshee hill, because I was working bugs out still. I was only running rear fenders.

Few years back, I was in the process of selling my 400ex. I spent so much time cleaning the thing, it looked better than showroom condition. I wanted to sell it to get an yfz so I made it look mint and never touched it while for sale. I had a buyer that wanted to come pick it up first thing in the morning. When I woke up I went out to take it out of the garage and fire it up. Everytime I tried to start it, it would run for like 3 seconds and die. This quad never had any problems with it, it just didn't want to leave me. So we pull started it and it would ride for a few and die. I filled up the gas tank, checked spark and told the guy I had some unexpected technical difficulties. After being a little fed up, and getting off the phone with the guy, I go out take the filter off and shove my hand through the boot to the carb and bam, there's a paper towel that I used to plug the boot while cleaning the filter.

I have done so many stupid things to bike and wasted so much time, I could write a pretty long book. All the crap over the years has taught me so much, yet I still have similar problems. I don't know, I think I'm just developing old-timers disease a little earlier than expected.

Chit, thats easy. I left a half full Bud Select in my 450r's airbox. Didn't even notice it when I put my lid on. Took it for a test spin and it started to run like crap and the smell of beer lingered in the air. Needless to say, it was a no brainer.

Not me, but a funny story that happened this week.

We were getting ready to leave on Thursday night for GNCC Rd 1 in Florida, well my buddy has a bare YFZ frame at 2pm. Starts assembling his motor, ends up having issues with cam cap drag, gets that sorted out, etc... ends up taking till nearly 3AM to get the motor in the quad and wired up, finish throwing it together and leave. Get down late Friday, unhook the trailer at our pits, go to the hotel and when I was just about a sleep I hear a voice go "Oh crap Zach... I'm not racing" I'm like "What?", he replies "I forgot to put my piston clips on :eek2:

Needless to say Saturday morning he tore the quad down while I was in search of piston clips. BIG thanks to the guys from Wiesco who were at the track and hooked us up big time!

Rebuilt a 250x motor and was putting all the bolts on and started putting the motor back into the frame but there was something in the way so i picked it up and it was the new piston. Ended up putting the old one back in. Dont know how managed doing that. :p

Put the my 440 piston in backwards. I rode it that way. Tore it back down and it had some valve marks stamped in the top of the piston. I put the piston in correctly and have been riding it like this for 9yrs. It dyno'd 43hp.

i did that on the intake mani on my truck! i was replacing the thermostat...needles to say, i needed to get a new intake manifold (i got a used one, it was cheaper than paying a machine shop to get it out)

Worst that happened to me was probably when I cam'd piped and jetted my 450r. I put it all together sounded great in my garage, I went to rip down the street and it was gargling all over and i was stumped....tore my whole bike back down (plastics gas tank and such) only to realize that I had put the air box lid back on.

A few things haha:

1) Strip the oil tank hole (would screw the bolt in and it wouldn't tighten haha). Had to re-thread a larger hole and get my dad to welt together a bolt, works fine now!

2) Ruin the screw that holds the air filter in place (used the wrong screwdriver, made a big mess, somehow got it out and then got a new bolt)

3) Strip the speed sensor bolt for my Trail Tech Vapor (new replacement bolt/cable is $20, ordering tonight haha)

cleaned my air filter and slipped in the boot, put my airbox lid on then was riding and w would hit the gas hard it was boggin out real bad. so i cleaned my carb then it still bogged. then i went to a guy that knew alot about motors told him the problem. he lifted my seat, took off the lid and my filter was just sitting at the bottem of my airbox. i felt like an idiot.

heck that reminds me when my friend got his new z400

we were all riding it around and having fun but i always though that when youd open it up it would start to drop rpm's instead of gain and i just said whatever and ignored it
so i pulled out my kfx and started riding with him around his house for the next 2 hours in basically a big dust storm once we stoped riding he said that the quad was bogging like i said before so im like what the heck check the airbox lid and see if its on all the way because that could casue the boging so he took the seat off and the lid looked like it was on so but we took it off anyway to try and realign it and the airfilter was sitting on the bottom of the box with the screw in the drainhole!! i laughed for hours while i wacthed him filp talk about funny!
