what frame will work?

I have a 1999 400ex that I need to replace the frame on. What years will work? I understand some changes where made for plastic mounting area's etc. is it like a 1999-2001 or what years will just bolt my old a-arm, swingarm, motor etc... bolt right upto?

they are all the same. any 400ex frame will work. but be sure to look at it close and make sure there is no cracks anywhere.

Are you 100% sure? I thought they had some small differences like plastic mounting tabs etc. plus didnt they start putting reverse on them?

There are small differences, but those differences are mainly how the wiring harness mounts up. All the other major components bolt up just the same. I'm doing a 2006 frame swap on my 2000 machine now.

If you want to stay with the 1st generation style 400EX frame, then you want a 1999-2003 frame.

Thanks for the heads up! Whats a decent price for a good condition 1999-2003 frame? Again dont need a subframe.

I picked up a 2006 frame for my 01 on Ebay for $100 and drove to go get it to save on shipping.Thats where they seem to get you on those.I would say $200 or so shipped so try to find one thats close to where you live so you can pick it up and like BigBad said make sure you check it out for cracks.

Actually any 99-04 frame will work. 05 is when they changed plastics and such.

so I would look for an 04, so the value of the bike increases a little.

Yea i was going to say,I changed my 00 to a 04 frame i didnt see any differance real easy exchange.everything bolted right up.the only differance in 05 and up is plastics
