Looking into getting a super motard style bike for the summer so that i don't have to drive my truck everywhere. was wondering if anyone on here had one and if they could give me any info?

which way am i better off going? 450 motocross bike with lights and slicks or drz400sm style bike that is factory?

what can i expect for gas mileage and what would i be looking at paying on avg for a decent newer used bike? Future possible mods?

Thanks,
Zack

if your riding any distance go with a drz the motor will last much longer than ones close to a true dirtbike...al supermoto bikes are uncomfortable to ride much of a distance...for short distances id go with a ktm enduro...the supermoto really has no practical use unless you live on some windy *** long roads

Another vote for the DRZ400SM for me! Those bikes are so much fun to ride.

I’ve got 20k on a 2006 KLX 250 duel sport. It gets 75 mpg if I ride conservatively.
It’s a little weak in the power department as a stocker but a pipe and rejet dose wonders for it. Easy to ride and a fun bike!
I’ve had it up 105 mph down hill with the wind at my back. lol!!!
It will run 60-65 all day long.

How do these top ends hold up on these bikes?

Isnt the constant reving of 5k+ gonna kill the valve train?

I am just wondering cause I want one, but I dont want to be having to put new top ends and valve train every 6 or so months.

I cruise at 60 with my KTM525EXC with the 6 spd like its nothing around 4k. That's the speed it likes best IMO. I usually get around 45-60 mpg, but I have seen as low as 40 riding the piss out of it. My bike is not comfortable. After 20 miles, it feels like you are sitting on a 2x4 with a towel on it. I love my bike, however if I had to do it all over again, I would have bought a factory sumo. Not a 250 or 400. Once you get comfortable on one of those, you will crave more power. As with the factory deal, it is easier to get street legal and the signals and crap will last longer.

Well my 250 red lines at a mind numbing 11,000 rpm so at 60mph in 6th gear is only 6000 rpm so that leaves it some head room so it’s not rapped out at highway speed.
In 6th gear every 1000rpm is good for 10 mph on the old gages. Like I say I have 20k and still running great. All I have done is change the oil and filter every 500-600 miles.

My friend has 50,000 miles on his drz400sm. At 40,000 miles he rebulit the top end. It never needed a rebuild even then, he just thought it would be a good idea since he drives it year round.

I've got an xr650 and love it, its not the best performing bike but its still really fun they're super-reliable!

I've got a Yamaha wr250x. Gets 65MPG's. It's fun as hell to ride on the back roads, but I don't like riding it on the highway. It would be great if they had a 450 motor in it. Until then, I'm looking to trade it in on an 04 cbr1000rr or an 06 cbr600rr at my dealer. Just checkin in with the ins company first....

I test road the Honda 650 and I didn’t like it as much as the KLX 250. yes it had better power and has a little weight to it but the way the front cowling pushes the wind up in your face way more then my KLX. The bad thing is I use a 50-50 tire and they will slide around like your on ice when the road is wet. Knoby’s on the wet pavement is just an accident waiting to happen.

I think a much cheaper route would be getting a Kawi Ninja 250. But hey I'd kill for a KTM or something, maybe if I get a summer job this summer I will finally have enough to get an enduro or supermoto..

i wouldnt get a ninja 250 unless i was a girl a 250f will kill one. but really and truely if your gettin a motorcycle for street use get one thats designed for it. i would rather have a sv 650 or a ninja 650. any for the ones that say they can eat up a crotch rocketin tight twisties. dont belive it ive never been passed by any super moto with my knee on the ground.

Key word was tight. If it is tight, Motard will come out on top. If it's a regular road, a 600 is the bike to have. I ride with lots of rockets. I know what I'm talking about.
