fast-YES, i bought my son a cr-125 when he was 14, he started riding at age 5, if he is a good rider it shouldn't be a problem, he will be scared of it for a little while "then watch out", broken collarbone was his only injury "at 16", now rides a yz250f "17", he prefers 2 wheels instead of 4, me i'll stay on 4

He will definatly wreak it a couple times at first, but after he learns and knows his limits. You wone regret it.

yes, they are very fast, they will somke a 400ex, he will most likely wrexk a couple times since its his first dirtbike and hes been riding a 250ex

try to get him a crf150, there a lot more mellow the a cr85 but, they should have plenty of power to satisfy him coming off a 250ex. once he learns the in and outs if dirtbiking, sell the 150 and buy a used (year or two old) cr85.just my opinion.

FYI-dont be intimidated by the "expert" they are no faster than a regular cr85. they are made for riders that are just a little too big for the regular model. it has bigger tires and slightly lower gearing to make up for the taller tire.

I don't know about the CR 85 but one of my buddy's got a YZ 80 for his boy. It is scary how fast that thing is. His boy would rather ride his blaster until I blow by him! :D I know he would walk all over me if he ever got good on the bike. He is trying to talk his dad into taking the YZ motor out and putting it in the blaster frame.
Either way it is a fun bike. Makes me want one. :macho Well a 250 anyway. :D

Man if you guys think 80s are fast, get on a CRF450 or YZ426F. Nothin like wheelying in 4th gear.. :D

I used to have a CR80. Nice little bike, kind of lackluster on power (compared to my 125). It wont have anywhere near the torque of the quad (even a 250ex.. lol), but it does have 3 times the horsepower. Have him ride an 80 first to see if he likes it. How big is he?

yeah a cr85 is just bigger but if he wants more power get the kx 100 its the same size

defineatly get him it. it not that bad for a first bike. they are fast but they wont kill someone if it is their first time. the first thing i ever rode was a kx80 (unless you count a jr50). he will have so much fun on it.

I would say watch the jetting closely, both on the plug and power delivery of a warm motor, change the crankcase oil regularly, and use GOOD premix oil, i'd suggest castor or synthetic, fouls and smokes a lot less, burns cleaner, and you can generally mix it leaner. I know there's more but that's what i paid close attention to.

i know u guys are honda guys, but in teh 85 department def go with the YZ85, and they make a big wheel for the 85 just not directly from yamahahahah

or go for the kx100 i absolutley love that bike its so much better handling n power wise than an 85

yeah he will definatly wreck a bunch of times utnil he get sthe hang of it, then he'll only wreck once n a while but it doesnt hurt that bad on a d/b

has he sat on one before? because when i was a that size i could barely fit on a normal cr 80, much less the taller expert

well i had a 98 kx 80 , port and polish , pipe , reeds, and filter and i raced a xr650 street bie and beat him.......the race was about 500 feet long. but i had the 80 when i was 13 and i was fine . just a few falls from being too short! but i had been riding since i was a year old before the 80

in the Feb. issue of Dirt Bike magazine issue, they have a 85cc shootout, of course the yz 85 is the winner again.
my son is 13 yrs old, he has a yz 85, i have 416ex, we run neck and neck, im way over weight though...... u have to get an aftermarket big wheel kit for it if u want a taller bike, thats the only bad thing about it, expensive kit. the other thing is, u have to be messing with the jetting to get it just right, being a 2 stroke, i hear yamaha will be coming out with a yz125f ( thats to race with the 85cc) its a 4 stroke. 4 strokes are alot less maint. one easy thing u could do is put a bigger top end on the 85's, they will rip for a small frame:blah
