you know 85-87 and 88/89 had different clutch covers? To use a 85-87 cover on a 88/89 motor(or kicker gears), you need a spacer made, it should be the size of the welded in spacer inside the 88/89 cover. I used a 85-87 cover on a 88/89 motor(kicker gears) and used a spacer that came with a hinson cover(88/89) to fill the gap of where the spacer inside the cover normally fills.
