I got me a 05 450r carb from ebay and started reading these threads on installing the carb and it was deffinetly not hard at all. I did NOT have to drill any new vent holes which was nice it fit the way it was all I did was reroute the hose forward and put it in the hole on the plastic gas tank shield and there were no kinks.

The wires are nothing do as you wish with those, The choke lever I took off and left the rest the way it was. The hot start was already disassembled on MY carb so I just filled the hole with RTV.

I put a little bit of oil on the intake boot and on the carb itself and with a lil bit of muscle and wedging the right way it went in fine. Then I put the cable on and 450r twist throttle and adjusted it to fit. The fuel line was on the 450r carb already so once installed I measured how much tube I needed, cut it right before the first bend in the hose then put it on the tank with a hose clamp and that was it.

I got lucky when I first got the carb I opened it up and checked the jet size and was nice to find it already had a 190 main and 50 pilot, so this is where I was with my stock carb on jetting so I turned the mix screw out 2 1/2 turns and installed the way described.

Started up as it always did right away with no choke, all I did was adjust the idle let it warm up and rode, Right away there was a big notice on the bottom and midrange power and speed, it was nice for a bolt on increase, I feel it kinda lose power towards the top end so I do need to jet again but its just a main so its not so bad.

My setup is different from others my 400 is set up for drag racing so I DONT run with airbox or even a filter unless im running dirt and im using straight headers no pipe.... So my jets are bigger and I dont use the stock intake tube either. To use a filter I use a 2in rubber hose on the carb and a aluminum thin wall tube with a UNI filter that fits the tube size with zip ties and hose clamps to hold it all together.

Im sure with some wedging, muscle and oil the stock intake tube and airbox will fit also. If your atv or carb is different in some way you may have to drill or do minor adjusting or jetting to get it to work right for you, Im at sea level in florida and this jetting is close for what im running I just need a main jet size change possibly a clip up or down on the needle but thats it.

I will update once I jet and get some 1/8 mile time slips, I will try to get some pics of the quad itself also for those interested.

Hope this is helpful in some way.....

actually the stock intake tube i dont recommend using the diameter of your intake tube is smaller then the intake on the carb itself...so with the stock intake tube your losing a lil bit of intake. for a few bucks at a hardware store you can buy some rubber grommets with hose clamps...and at an aluminum or metal shop you can pick up the same type of tube i have that matches the diameter of the carb... with the tube and rubber grommets you can use the stock or aftermarket air filters for the 400ex. this of course is for open filter design and doesnt work with an airbox..

pics coming soon!!!

This is how the filter clears the seat, it just touchs the bar and the seat doesnt touch...this setup is so much nicer then a airbox in so many ways...
