Anyone have any experience with the Dodge ram 1500 5.7L hemi and 2500 cummins diesel 5.9L ? Which one is better on fuel? Any other things about them I should know ? Looking at getting a Dodge truck in a year or so.

if you want mpg's go with the cummins. you could potentially get double the mileage of the hemi

My dually has a 5.9 Cummins and it's the best motor anyone in my family has owned, reliability and smoothness wise

It all depends on how heavy your foot is and the type of roads you mostly use. I drive an 03 4.7l V8 1500 and average out at about 11.8. If I am lucky on the highway, I get around 14-15. My dad has an 08 5.7l 1500 and he gets much better mileage what I see. When I drove that, I would get 11.5 to 13 depending on where I'm heading. We have a lot of open roads around where I'm at but on the other hand there's lot of traffic. I took that on a couple highway voyages and made out with 17-18 mpg. It is definitely more efficient. I have no experiences in the diesel department so I have nothing else to preach about.

The 5.7 hemi's are a lot of fun. You won't be dissapointed.

Yeah. I think I will go with the Cummins then.. It is a little more pricey, but more effecient in the long run and more power.. Plus I love the roar of a diesel.
My friend has a 5.7 Hemi and it has some power, she'll wip around quick.

What aftermarket exhuast systems are available for the Cummins?

i have an 04 cummins 2500, 5" magnaflow, bully dog programmer, quadzilla pressure box, cool air intake, and a goerend tranny, it has seen 100,000 miles of daily driving, with about 60% of that being abuse, onlr problems i had were a water pump, and the infamous ball joints. and a couple stock trannies of course. funnest vehicle i ever had. and with 3:73 gears with 33's i get around 24.5 mpg highway or in town. its got 185k on the ticker now and still goin strong, i love the cummins, they last forever.

Yeah, the other day I was watching a show on the "Speed" channel, and there was a guy there that builds Cummins motors and he said they should last 700,000-800,000 miles !

I would probably get a chip, cold air intake, exhuast , lift kit, and bigger tires if I were to buy one.

My 05 Daytona 1500 4X4 5.7 Hemi does just fine. I've had it for 2 years now and not a problem so far. It only has 62k though. I have it chipped and exhaust done (cold air should be in in the next few weeks) and I average 17-18 on the highway. Love the truck though. My old man had a 1996 1500 dodge and we still can't kill it and it has 300k hard km's on it.

I've got a 03 with the 5.9 cummins with the famous ol slipomatic in it. I've got a 4 inch lift and 35's and it's straight piped soon to be stacked. As far as mpg's go i was getting 13 in town and 15 highway no matter how I drove it that's the best I could do. I slapped my buddys Diablo predator on it and put it on extreme with I believe is 100hp and now I'm seeing 16-18 in town and 22-24 highway, couldn't be happier getting that with 35's. I'm anxious to see what I get once I get me an intake and throw the stack on.
