went to start bike (05 ltz) and it was totally dead, no lights, nothing. bump started and it ran ok, but it was like the rev limiter kicked in at half throttle, like it was in reverse. headlight was dim. Nuetral light was dim. I could take the pos wire off battery and it would still run so the stator is still working. I let it sit there and idle and I noticed that the nuetral light would light up brightly on intervals. Do I just have a bad battery?

i think your first guess that its the batt.

battery is good, i tried one off my motorcycle and same story. If I cross the starter wire and the positive cable it turns over, but wont fire. and it will run if i bump start it.

so that means u have no power from starter button to relay follow from starter relay to button to key switch to see were you lost power just a process of elimination

ok, there was a wire that was cut that was causing the electrical problem. I repaired it, but now the bike is running rough.
It barely wants to start, and it only runs good at full throttle. It backfires a lot. Did running the bike without connection to the battery cause a problem, what could it be?

so you fixed the electrical problem but now the motor is acting up?

That is correct. I recently rejetted, I'm hoping that that the main jet came loose and is just dumping too much fuel in into the motor, but I'm not. sure yet.

change your spark plug maybe running it with the wire intermitent fouled it. Does it start and idle ok? If it is acting uo only in gear check the neutral switch located behind the shifter and right below front sprocket. Take it off and inspect the copper traces for oxidation and clean them off. If they don't make good connection then it runs like it is in rev limit all the time.

Changed plug, nuetral switch looks good, carb looks in order. Any chance it cld have jumped time gears? If so how do I check?

It backfires realy bad/explodes when you let off the gas. That says its got to be an air/fuel problem right?

its a lean problem check you head pipe gasket for leaks

No leaks. What causes carb slider to go up and down? Does it need vaccuum?

yes its a cv (constant velocity carb) if you blow air into the cut out on the airbox side the slide will raise if it dosnt there is a leak at the top side of the carb at the diaphram or the small o-ring on top could be missing or have a leak

wouldn't hurt to check timing and valve clearence or just inspect cam and cam followers. To check timing you need to remove the top cover from the motor. Through access hole in stator cover rotate motor until T is in window then with top cover removed valves should all have a gap(measurable) and the cam gears have arrows on them that line up with the head horizontally. Make sure cams retainers are good.

also...when i'm trying to start it, every once and awhile it will lock up, wont turn over all the way. if i let off the starter for a second and try it again it will turn over. its like its got too much compression for the starter. but not every time, just every once in a while.
