IMO, start it off right by buying a good aftermarket frame. Take some time to figure out what rear suspension you want (CR500 link, stock linkage or no-link). Once you have that figured out, and locate a frame you'll be alot better off when you start buying parts.

If it were me, I would just save the cash to at least buy the frame, swinger, arms and shocks as a package. Having those parts matching is a GREAT plus.

I agree with him ^^^^
Buy one that already runs and just "customize" it to your likes, then later on down the road you can add things as you get the money.

Before you do anything, go ahead and add some more stuff to your signature.

No I'm being serious. We were all wondering if you had an outerwears and handguards on your 400EX. Now we know.

This is funny stuff.

I love the logic though, I don't have lots of money so I'm going to buy it piece by piece so it costs a lot more money than just saving the money and buying something whole.

Save your money and buy something whole. When you buy parts - everything needs refurbishing and rebuilding - never trust anybody especially on ebay, especially with motors.

if you still have your 400 parts, keep your axle, a arms, front shocks, wheels, axle carrier, and steering stem. they will all work on a 250r.That would be your cheepest route to building one. I have a nece rear shock on ebay that im sure you could use too:D

Im building one right now. I am poor so I started with a stock frame. I got no aftermarket suspension yet and I got about 2500 into my bike. I like building bikes my way so this is good for me. but for 2500 iv seen some bikes on sale with good aftermarket suspension and good motor mods.

Start a savings account and do your best to shake grandma

Really? I'm usually wondering what someone is running for grips.

This is awesome. There's a couple of signatures that quote this quote that...etc. It get's old to scroll through that stuff when you are on a smart-phone. I love it man!

I agree with the above comments, you need to buy a complete bike so you know what all is there if this is your first R. It will nickel you in dime you to death by the time you have all your parts, you will have done paid close to $1k in shipping alone. ;)

Get on Craigslist and find a local buy and go from there.

I agree; I bought mine on Craigslist for $1600, but easily have about 3 times that in it now, thanks to a friend who wrapped it up pretty good plus all the additions and upgrades I've made.

If you are younger and on a budget, it will take you a ton of time and a bedroom full of dollars to put one together...if you're alright with that, then have at it. If you want a fun ongoing project, I would personally buy a rolling chassis, or a clean complete bike, strip it, and rebuild to your liking.

very true, i put $5000 into my 250r when i had it and could have bought a killer hybrid for that price or even one hellacious 250r. I regret building it from the frame up even though its fun, just not a good thing to do if your on a budget

you can build it from ground up, just buy about 20 250r's, but them for the parts that are on them take them off and keep them and put other parts on or part it out! **** you might be able to have a250r for free then!

but in all honesty you can get a sick 250r for 2500-3500, just depends where you are, and what time of the year it is...

Just buy a complete R I been down this route too. It leads to heartache bite the bullet and finance one. Or better yet if you got a 400 try and trade someone or sell it and get an R. Like others have said much better buying complete machine.
