i have a 01 400ex it has a hotcams stage 2 camshaft and a recently added jet kit.im 265 lbs. and as u can figure by my weight that im having problems shooting out of a corner or shooting out of hole (lol). without breaking in 2 the motor what could help me get a little more bottom end power?i was thinking of a cdi or coil, jus sumthing like that because i cant stand tearing that 4-stroke motor down(aggrovating).so if u have any advise besides getting a 450 please let me know.

have a blessed day!!

14 tooth sprocket will definitely meet your needs. mine is scary when i have my 14 on.

I have a similar issue, does going down a tooth have a huge effect on the top end, I recently got a set of kenda bear claws 22x12 and I have lost about 8 +/- mph, how much more could I expect to lose, any ideas and how would dropping a tooth change the chain tension

the cdi or coils wont do you anything for that really, its more of a throttle responce and easier starting thing on a stock 400. on a modded one you will gain topend iff your machine is still making power past the stock rev limit.

pipeless hit the spot a 14t sprocket will do you fine. might i also suggest smaller rears if your riding style allows that.

WHAT IS STOCK SPROCKET WISE? AND WHAT WOULD THE 14 DO? MORE TORQUE OR HIGHER TOP SPEED?

stock gearing is 15/38, smaller on the front will add more bottom, but you will lose on top. if you have 22" rear tires, you should have gained top end, and if you go down to a 14 on the front, with 22" tires, you should be pretty close to stock gearing again.

stupid question but you do have an aftermarket pipe?

is this trail riding or MX? But ya drop a tooth on front sproket cheapest route to go.

Ya with tires the taller tire slower start more top end
Smaller tire faster starts slower top end.

without doing anything to the engine as you have specified, I second what Pipeless416 suggested.

Dropping 1 tooth on your forward sprocket will give you the results you are looking for.
as well, it will be under $20 to do.

welcome to the forum.

Didn't they change gearing on the 400 ex
99-04 is 15-38
05-08 is 15-39

The reason you feel slower is probably because they are so big and heavy the 22 should get you faster but since they are 12 inches wide to its probably just to much extra weight

Maybe the guy wanting low end could get lighter tires/smaller height (if he doesn't need the ground clearance)

if money is an issue go down one tooth on your front sprocket.if u dont mine spending a little bit of money a 39mm fcr carb will do the trick the throttle response is much better. when its time to go in the engine again get a bigbore kit believe me you wont have in problem with topend or bottom end power oh yea weight wise im alot bigger then you. and it pulles me with ease.

Another thing you can try is the Sparks +6 key. If you dont want to do much to the motor this will really wake it up. its cheap and installs pretty quick
