the axle/carrier/brake will fit, the front end will fit, but will require narrowing up the a-arm mounts where they go to the frame by 1/4" the 400ex frame mounts are skinnier. same as putting ex arms on an r, you need to make 1/4" spacers, but the geometry of the arms will be the same. and if your arms on the r are +1 fwd, i THINK they will be +0 on the ex the width measurements will be the same. your 250r stem will work too depending on how much meat there is for the stops, will require some whittling on the front of the stem or they hit the stoppers before its turned very far.

does the subframe match up to a 400?

no the subframes from aftermarket r chassis wont fit the 400ex

i dont think the 250r brake will fit the 400ex. but the carrier is thr same. the axle and hubs work, but the spline count on the two bikes are different.

basically the whole rear assembly can be swapped from a 250 to a 400ex with the 400ex brake set-up. its has to do with how the swingarmand brake meet.

good point jcs003, i forgot about that, it depends on the swingarm, but the only interference point with the 250r brake is the fwd bolt that holds the caliper to the brake stay will sometimes hit the swingarm, this is easily resolved with either a countersunk bolt, or even a button head should gain you the clearance needed for this, as for the spline count, you are right, the hubs are 1 spline different. but the brake rotor hub splines are the same.

thanks for all the info...

so i would have to open my mounts up a little bit on the 400ex frame for the 250r parts to bolt on?

i would take the material off the a-arm pivots, it would take quite a bit of fab work to change the mounts on the frame, and if you ever wanted to put them back on an r, just make some 1/4" spacers.
