hey all just joined seems like one of the more down to earth forums
i just put a 440 kit on my 400 ex and that is it nothing else it needed a piston and rings im not looking for a racing machine i now now i should have went with something else but didnt, its back together and seems to run fine the question is what do i need to do to keep it running well it seems to be lean i figured that but what do i have to at a min to not burn a hole in piston or
tear it up rather would a stage one jet kit be fine or do i have to go bigger do i have to put exhaust on or can i just jet it and be good to go i hope i dont have to run raceing fuel or none of that any info will be a big help

You will have to go up on your main jet to get the jetting right. What compression piston did you get? 10:1, 11:1 should be good for pump gas, anything more and I would run 110. The 440 will be just as reliable as stock if you set it up right (jetting) and do regular maintenance (oil change, clean air filter, and so on.)

Also you don't have to do exhaust or anything else just get the jetting down and you will be good.

i wouldnt waster the money on a jet kit, go to the local dealer or jetsrus.com and get the jets you need

id go to a 42 pilot jet, it will help alot with cold starts.

and get a few main jets, if i remeber correct stock main is a 48 so get a 50 and a 52 keihin main jet, one of the two should be spot on

not a problem. it will be alot cheaper than 60 bucks or however much a jet kit is goin for these days

the stock main is a 148. on my 440 i had a 172 main. and the stock pilot is 38 and i had a 45. just to give you an idea.
