So I got tired of either using Mother's polish and a rag by hand or the dinky little bench grinder and the 1/2" wide buffing wheel, so I took a chunk of brass bar I had laying around and turned an arbor to fit on my Shop Smith that now takes 4-5 buffing wheels stacked up in a row. It will take either 6" or 8" buff wheels (1" arbor), and works pretty damn well. I used a 1"-14 nut that I faced down to 1/2" thick, a fender washer, bored the opposite end to .625 (5/8") to slip on the Shop Smith's spindle, and drilled/tapped it in the mill for a pair of 5/16"-18 set screws.

Cutting 1"-14 threads in the lathe and testing with a nut:

good job. nice that people are still using machining trades to good use.

where are you getting the buffing wheels and buffing compund from? both can run up in price very fast. i use to work for osborn international (in cleveland now in richmond indiana). we use to make all kind of deburring/polishing wheels and buffs. i no longer work there but i still have a good connection if you need buffs, wire wheels, hones....look them up online: osborn international.

let me know

It was a last minute idea; I got the buffing wheels from Menard's for like $7.50+/- a piece, and I had the compound laying around- cheap stuff I bought at Lowe's. It does work a ton better. My dad polished up a bunch of old chrome plated Lyman boat parts yesterday, and his face looked like he just cleaned a chimney.
