My First Winter Rebuild!!

ok guys im starting to strip my 2001 400ex down tonight!!

here are my plans

- black frame
- black oil tank
- black nerf
- black dg bumber
- relocate battrey in airbox
-new grips
-new axel bearings
-top end gaskets
-black swinger
- black bars
-new air filter idk what type yet
- Pro-circuit T-4 shorty pipe( black) with groung headers ( all black)

painting frame& pipe with dupli-color VHT flame proof
nerfs & swinger & handlebars with dupli-color Roll bar and chassie paint

If I were you I would consider taking the frame to an automotive shop to get painted.

No matter how good of job you do, when it's at home it just doesn't last when your boots get to rubbin' on it.

I started my rebuild December 10th. It should be done in March :eek: (Put money into the suspension, then had to replace tons of stock parts like brakes and hubs etc. Now I'm waiting on parts to put the drive train back together. After this week I am going to tear into the engine. Then put it back together. Painting is going to have to wait until next winter. :blah: )

ya i dont realy care if it rubs off a little my stock paint rubbed off and im doing the rebuid on a buddget so im doing all the work myself:D

Alrighty, but I'd say for $50 more you could have it down professionally. If you think about it, it's going to take ALOT of paint. I'd say atleast 5 cans of gloss. And 3 cans of primer. Maybe more. But good paint is $6 a can. So if you do the math, you're looking at close to $50. I think any automotive shop could do it for under $100. It's easy work and they need the business. lol

I wouldn't go black!!!! I thought it would look cool, but after the first time I rode, it looked like crap. Always looks dirty. Left it black for 2 years now I PC it Blue/Silver Vein. Looks sweet! Actually still in the process of putting it back together. I plan on posting the whole rebuild when Im done.

Also be carefull with the gussets. Don't go too crazy. Your frame needs to flex. If you make it too rigid, your going to do more damage than good! Ask some of the more experienced riders/racers what they do. Personally, I did not gusset at all. I don't race, but I ride pretty damn hard, I have never had a problem with my frame. Good Luck!

i agree you shouldn't goto crazy but he need to make sure all the weak links are covered...

hey aDviSol2y the black will lokk fine befroe each ride just spray a little sc1 clear coat and when you wash it use simple green and a pressure washer



and as far as gusseting goes yes i am going to do it but not to crazy like you said

I used clear coat, but its still lookeed like crap. I can't remember what paint I used. It was an automotive paint though.

ya im using Dupli color VHT HIGH TEMP ROLL BAR AND CHASSIE paint it though as **** and good quality paint... 9 bucks a can

and i painted my headers with VHT HEADER PAINT that is good up to 2,000 degrees.. most people use that rustolem paint and its crap in a can

I've put about 50 hours on it since the painting and it looks like it did on day one. I'm extremely happy with it.

Also, you better hope the paint holds up well on everything else. It would suck to see it start chipping from rocks and whatnot. I don't think I'd do anything other than PC or get my frame professionally done. I know you're on a budget and all, but once that stuff starts to chip, it's going to look like crap. Again, I hope that doesn't happen, I'm just saying it would suck.

trust me it wont i did my bubmer with the paint and the next morning i took a knife and scrapped to see if the paint would chip and nothing happened!! i even put it in the grass and through small rocks at it and nothing happened its a good paint

you have to take the time and prep it well!!

i cleaned up my oil lines and polished and painted the ends of the lines with some metal cast adds some nice detail:cool:

and i changed my mind i watched extreme 4x4 today and they painted there rock crawler frame with this and in doing my frame the same way

- dupli color truck bed liner
-metal specs silver
- then metal cast red

with be durrable and look great

and my sub frame is gonna be gloss and doing my lower a-arms gloss black and the uppers the same as frame and make then candy red!:D

ya man i used duplicolor metal cast red its a tranparent paint (thin) so i just polished it with mothers mag cleaned with rubbing acohol and paintedthin coat :)

the one i have in there is seised up and i had a member chris on here come to my house and beat it with a 4lb sludge hammer and still wont budge and i sprayed pb blaster on it for 5 days.....so when he comes over to help me with the gusset welding were gonna saw-zaw it out

ya im gonna start shooting this weekend i hope it looks good to the metal spec has alot of glitter and high gloss to it and when i put the metalcast over top its gonna pop in the sun...the metalcast is thin and transparent so its gonna hace the gloss and sparkle but with the look of cangy red:macho :devil:

it should hold up thats what they used on extreme 4x4 the tv show on there rock crawler frame ..and that sucks it sucks more for me b/c it 30 degrees and raining hard all weekend and i have a leak under my shop door and so im haveing to stuff towels under the door lol:huh

yea i saw that episode a few weeks ago. looks like some good stuff. and thats cool that you have a shop to work in. im 16 and i have to work on my quad in a cramped up one car garage with all my dads crap everywhere (just look at the avatar picture). if you can rebuild a quad from the ground up in my garage, you can do it anywhere.:grr: im deffinatly building my own garage this summer:devil: oh and btw were u planning on racing your quad when u were finished with it???

dude thats weird hahaha but yea its a pain. i think the biggest pain in the ***** was takin the motor apart. tryin to keep track of everything was pretty tough. but lemme tell ya tht 416 kit rips man. and thats cool, i gotta do a few more things then ill be ready to race. im lookin for a pair of 450r shocks for the fron and then ill b good to go:cool:

This is by far the BEST budget build I've seen in a while. Making use of the resources you have and not going for crap. Lol...but I think I speak for all of us when I say that I'd like to see a tally of how much you end up paying in the end. It'd be great to see with what your doing. Keep stayin positive and eventually it'll be done. But then again almost everytime someone does a rebuild it never ends ;)

Was the paint you used on the frame the VHT roll bar and chassie? What did you do for the frame prep and did you use and primer or clear coat on it?

no on the frame i did

truck bed liner as base coat
metal specs silver
then metalcast red

after you apply silver you can change it up b/c the metalcast comes in many colors


no i did not clear coat b/c its sooo glossy already and the paint is super tough
