i am doing a resto project, and i dont know what to do about plastic.. i know oem is the BEST!!! i cant find it and if i do theres a good chance i cant afford it, i seen red front fenders go for around 800 on ebay!! no hood or rears!! but i heard that the new maier is good stuff, fits good shines good ect.. is it true?? anyone got any pics with is installed? i know that the older maier was junk!! i also have put 400ex plastic on my 88 back in 2001 and it looked good, i fit the stock 88 hood and light on it and that helped a lot. so its either maier if you guys say its good enough. or white 400ex with factory 250r style hood and custom made 86 style decals made for the ex fenders.
thanks a lot

I had maier on my lt250r quadracer and loved it. I order some for my trx250r and got it 1/2 off directly from maier. It's blue but saved me alot of money. CLOSEOUT!

Yea the new stuff is pretty good! The only thing i dont like is that the mounting is not like the factory is, but for the price its alot better than paying 1500 for a set of oem!

I have a set on my 250R, I am happy with them. There are some pretty good gaps along both sides of the tank, but I also have a 4 gallon IMS tank, with a stock tank and cover these would probably be gone.

I bought a set of Maiers for my 450R back at the end of 2005 when I started racing. Used these plastics until I did a rebuild of the quad in the spring of 2009. These plastics have about 4,000 race miles on them, plus hundreds of test miles. Even with all that wear and tear on them, they actually still look decent.

I run Maiers on mine... they look great, I had to make some brackets to keep the rears from shaking when I ride, but other than that they are great.

The hood, tank, and seat are OEM. The front and rear fenders are Maier.

I got the decals from ddrslap, (ebay user name) on ebay. Great seller. I also think, the guy I got the frame decals for my resto has the fender decals too. I have his email as well.

I have the race cut one piece fronts on mine and the stock replacement style in the back. the shine nice, that im happy with. the front has a velcro strap with a metal ring that goes across the back of the of the tank to keep the plastic tight agaisnt the tank. the strap sucks and the metal ring broke fairly quikly. i just "daisy chain" a few zip ties together an it works fine. the mounting on the back is not as good as the stock setup. the L brackets rattle against the metal bar constantly because the fenders can wiggle from side to side. i ended up trimming about 6 inches of the bottom of the fender to help match the look of the fronts, and to lessen the amount of mass wiggling from side to side. then i got an OMF billet seat latch which really helped to secure the fenders down. heres some pics of it.

My mechanic actually has to make me a new bracket for the front right bracket just above the pipe because i never had the stock 1's & i thnk the fenders that came off had been cut and had a different hole. As far at the rear, they can sit up higher. I've got the brace on but haven't mounted the brackets. If u use a maier tank cover they'll advise u to get a "HONDA" tank gasket or something to avoid leakage and the hoods i thnk they'll line right up.

I've had Maier on both my yfz450 and my 250r and have had no issue's. Check out the closeout section. Got both the fronts and rears for like $230.

I got the blue direct from Maier's closeout section too. Saved about $250.

Why do you have your 450r shocks mounted like that?

Here is a picture of my '86 with Maier rears and hood.

hey dynofox I see your "R" is set up for woods. Do you run into much of a problem with the race cut front fenders?

I do get muddier but not all that much. I've got +2 arms so the front is wider than the full fenders anyway. I personally like being able to see the wheels, makes navigating some of the tighter trails easier.

dyno - i am running the stock radiator shrouds. They stick farther forward than the aftermarket aluminum ones do. Because of that i would have had to cut them if i wanted the resivors to be in the back like the stock setup on the 450. I didnt want to cut so i mounted them backwards. I figured it wouldnt make a difference.

Good to know, didn't realize the stock shroud was that much different. You had your shocks re-valved? I had mine set up softer along with softer springs, very plush now.

my maier race cuts on my hybrid dont fit very well. the seat sits up or the fenders hang. either way its not a great fit. also where the one piece front meets the rear they are not a particular great match. suffice to say their is no better fit than OEM.

dyno - no i never had them revalved or resprung. that was in the original plan but money issues cut into that. i was bottoming my stockers out on the track though so i figured i would give them a shot in stock form. for the little money invested they are working out pretty well. i did a little review about a month ago in this forum. i think i called it trx450r shocks ride report, or something like that. who did the work on yours? if i could get a set of springs and the work done for a good deal i would look into it more seriously but GTT wants around $400 to do it and thats a little steep at the moment.

here is a picture that shows the shroud a little better. you can see how close it actually is. it also shows what JCS is talking about, where the one piece meets the rears it doesnt exactly line up. i dont think the way the seat sits is too bad though.

i have seen the race cut and heard from others that they are no good. but they are nothing like the 2 piece front fenders they make, you can see i huge differance just in pics..
ya the race cuts remind me of the maier from back in the day.. JUNK!!!!!

also note that maier plastic is like snowflakes, theres no 2 exactly alike lol, i run it though, oem is way too expensive, fullbore looks good, but unless your running white, im not a fan of all the white crease marks, cant beat oem but i just cant justify it, i like the maier stuff, just wish it fit a little nicer. oh well we're supposed to ride these things like a 10 dollar hooker :p

Sorry, crappy cheap camera a few years ago. But mine is at least 6 or 7y.o. and it still shines.
