My Fire Dept. just got a 1986 Honda Fourtrax 350 given to us to use for beach rescues. It did not run when we got it, i have taken it on as a project. I took the carb off and rebuilt it, started it up. i put it in first with the clutch in and it jumped foward just a bit, then i let off the clutch and the ATV didn't move till throttle was applied. during my test ride i was in 2nd and went to stop, i pulled the clutch lever in and the ATV stopped (almost like brakes were applied), and the engine started to die. It has done the same thing multiple times now. other than that the clutch seems to be working. the oil is very old (other entity didn't maintain it) and has not been changed yet. could the sludgy oil be causing this problem or is there another possible problem other than friction plates.
