Was my first ever sport quad
it was whooped up and needed rebuilt
so i traded it for a 2001 yz250f that needed nothing but a tire

sucks looking back and thinking of all the memorys you had on it, was the fastest piped 400ex i ever seen

i have a KFX450, but will never sell the 400EX. That bike has never let me down...and probably never will.

For all that they are not, they are still dang good ol bikes for what they are.

I haven't been able to make myself sell mine.
I've been trying to talk myself into selling it for 2 years now.

But I think that in the end, selling it is probably the practical thing to do for me.

I just cannot for the life of me make up my mind which route I want to go. I agonize about it.

If I am going to continue to go without reverse on a Honda, I should build a 450R I think.

But I already have a 450cc and would have to do a Rekluse or find a trail tech flywheel for it to be an OK replacement.

I would like to do a gusseted DVX400 or an '09 LTZ400...

But then again I just want to mod out a 400EX too. To me though, it just doesn't make a lot of sense to do mine because I want a reverse motor... and they just cost too much to pick up.

So I think I would be happier to pick up an 05+ 400EX, transfer my bolt-ons... and then sell or part out my old EX for enough to build the new one up.

yeah the ex is just solid. I had a yfz450 as well as my new ex and i decided to cash out and get the money for the yfz while it was still very clean, then i bought the 01 ex.

I missed mine so much over the summer that I pulled it out of "storage" in the corner of my garage after almost 5 years of sitting. I replaced, re-furbished, rebuilt, and powdercoated everything. Went from a stock yellow 2001 to this:

Then it turned into basically a pile of parts, and here is how it sits now:

And one next to my 450:

Now all I need is for the snow to go away so I can break in my new motor.

Looks good. What kind of nerfs are those on the second and third pics?

Got the same nerfs, very good for the price i paid on ebay. My only annoyance is they dont connect in the front like most nerfs but mount to the frame with little tabs and bolts, im waiting for it to break..

my 1999 400ex has had a hard life and still runs and handles great, even after buying my trx450r and my yfz450 I still like riding the old 400ex from time to time................
so much that I bought a new left over 2008 400ex

its the most complete quad ever made, it can putt putt through the trails with my kids, burn around the mx track, carve some dunes or put in a day of work at the farm.........

no other quad can handle all that as well as the 400ex

I kinda went backwards. Had a 05 predator which I will never talk crap about, it treated me well however when i got this 01 440ex, what a world of diff. This baby handles like a corvette! Just digg it into the corners and it just comes right out! I love my EX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I miss mine sometimes but then my 250r comes into mind. As far as my favorite quad for the woods my 400ex was fun as all get out. It was also my most well set up for mx suspension wise but my 250r still handled like it was on rails. I plan to get another and mod it just the same as my other one
