DS650 vs. 450

Hey Everybody!

I have a quick question for you..

I have been watching many DS650 vs. ___ 450 videos and it seems EVERY time the 450 wins weither it in on pavement or dirt. But why? My cousin has a DS650 Baja and when he took it to the drag strip it was clocked at 100-101 mph (filter & pipe). What makes it possible for the 450s to win? I am VERY confused!!!!! Please explain!

well the ds 450 is a completly differnt machine. revs faster then the 650 and weight about 150 lbs more. gearign is differnt. and the motor is kind of sluggish. compared the the can am. drag racing is about good starts, and more so torque then top speed. the faster you can get up to speed in a short distance is better then winding it out over a mile strech. my brother has a ds 650 and its heavy. when i drag raced him in feilds i was gone off the line.

Rider skill has alot to do with it as well.

eveidnetly some exspensive stuff justin. i just glanced over and ignored the 101.

also how long of a drag race are we talking about.

A filter and pipe always adds 35 mph but it takes away from horsepower. God I thought everyone knew that!

Ds very easily can get to 100 with stock tires and a long run

I've raced a DS650 in the deserts of Nevada.... Filter, Pipe, CDI... 17-38 Gearing... 22 Inch tires. 91mph was all it would pull, on a long stretch of flat powerline-road.

It would take quite a bit more work to "easily" get to 100.

...On another note, it's a trip... hitting a G-out at 90mph on that heavy of a machine. Ha.

He has a video of the drag race somewhere on YouTube.. I know he has more done to it.. I just can't think of it off the top of my head.. it isn't stock. I just love that quad though! It may be "heavy" which I never noticed, but the power is amazing and so is the suspension! It just soaks every little bump up!

So are you telling me that the 450 has more power? Or is just faster because it is lighter?

Lighter, Quicker, Faster revving.

In a long run, the DS would probably have the top-speed advantage. But, in a shorter drag. That doesn't come as much into play. The 450 will get to it's lower top-speed much quicker, and the 650 will never have a chance to catch up to that to use it's higher top speed.

Don't forget rider skill maybe playing a part. Simple, really.

I absolutely LOVE how people always rag on the DS650's weight, but when talk about the 700XX comes up, it's god. The 700XX weighs just as much and isn't really all that faster. (Not saying you're one of the 700XX lovers, just saying in general)

The DS650's are nice quads for wide-open high-speed riding. They have real nice long travel suspension and very stable. But a 450 will take it in an acceleration drag.

Eric, I wasn't "ragging" on the 650's.. I absolutly LOVE them. And like the one person assumed above, "You must have not ever rode a 450 before," that is true, I have not. Therefore I do not have anything to compare it to and that is why I am asking you guy. I am just saying, when I ride my cousins 650.. it really does not feel heavy at all! And that sucker mooooovvves! :eek2:

I didn't say you were ragging on it. lol. I know you like them. I like the 650's myself. But they are on the chunky side.

They are beasts with a ron woods kit. 680, high compression, cam, etc.

Actually with the 730 stroker, they've easily made 75-80hp out of them. A hell of a dune machine.

i could see how the irs on the 700xx would be a smoother ride. but i absoulutely hate riding my brothers ds650. its underpowered compared to my old 450. by the time my brother would be out of first id be clicken up to third. dont get me wrong as big as the ds is it handles great. but 101 is a big number. maybe with a built motor and a shot of nos.

what i dont get is people saying that ds650s are slow. mine doesnt have major stuff done to it and i beat most 450s in a sand drag. perhaps its that i have never ridden a stock one. now, a 400ex with an xr650....more power than the ds and lighter than a 400:devil:

And guys.. you can make fun of me all you want.. but I am simply telling you the facts about his quad! And that was with the air box removed, almost straight pipe, jetting, and gearing change. Like I said, make fun of me if you want, but I am not BS'n you.. there is no reason to! It's not even my quad!!
