I would seriously suggest trying out that YZ motor. It's been said many times that the 03-04 YZ450F/ 250R geometry hybrid is the best quad ever built for MX. Not to mention most aftermarket frames have the pivot bolt location positioned differently for the Yamaha vs the Honda for different types of acceleration.

have u had one of these urself derek ?u see i really need to powder coat the bike and would hate to rebuild the bike then relaise i would rather have the crf .i already have a proper laeger crf and would really like pair .my brother also as one and my friend also has a crf so we kind have a bit of a honda club.but i have read the 4spd yam is a great motor.

I don't have that bike, no. But I did have another YZ450F motored hybrid and I can definately tell you it was a great engine for MX! What you really want to know is how the power delivery is compared to your CRF. Here's the deal, and i'm sure others would agree. The YZ feels alot more like a 2 stroke (except with all the 4 stroke torque). It revs to the moon and never, ever stops pulling. The power hits alot harder than the CRF and allows you to just blister the tires out of corners and control the front end and steering easily.

In my experience the Honda engines seem to have more low end traction, and be smoother but lack the pull of the Yamaha engine.

We often compare the YZ to a 250R and the CRF to a 400EX (in reference to how the power delivers) Both equally matched but totally different.

All i'm suggesting is to try it. You may just LOVE it!

Judecrf.....I have a 99 wide framed yz laeger chassis that i ran the yz426 motor in for almost two years. I had to buy a back up motor because of the yamahas being tempermental....The yamaha has alot more moving parts in motor and they cost more than a honda too. Yamaha has been compared to a 250r and i would agree but the honda is better for lowend and has a flat torque curve which makes it better for mx(im sure some might disagree)
I got jb to convert my frame in 2003 and it only costed like $450 because the motor fit in with hardly no modifications(bottom motor mount rocked forward, bearing sleeves cut a little shorter, and welded brackets on top frame rail for the head stay brackets off of dirtbike, custom exhaust). I still got this bike and i only have one motor because the honda has been so reliable and still the original bottom end(replace topend every year). Money, reliability, easier power to handle, and all my buddies that came off 250rs and switched to crfs are way faster now and regret letting me have the advantage on them for so long....

This is why i choose crf450r over yz anything

ps. i won a tt national championship on this bike in 2005 also and many other wins and accomplishments(honda for sho)

Did i mention that i think crf450r is the right choice? lol

thanks chris i have to agree on the crf as i said b4 i already have a laeger crf and want them to ride the same altough one will be wide frame and this one narrow frame.i may already have a guy for the complete eingine and elecric and carb he is buying anoher laeger that been standing for 5 years that ran a 426 so he is hinking on a projec to its actually from the guy i got mine from .these guys used to have 5 laegers at the one time and that will be the last to go .

piece of cake to do the swap. the Yamaha motor and the honda motor are very similar in size. I converted one over, and the bike rode very well. Curious to see how a narrow frame would handle if it was strectched out to 50" wide. My guess is that it would be awesome. I'm a Honda guy personally. I have heard some good things about the Yamaha, just not for me.
