View Full Version : Which Sub Would You Get?

Well since I am a gold reward zone member at beat buy, I get anything shipped to my house for free, so shipping price isn't a concern. I'm not looking to spend a ton, so these are my two options.

Sony - Xplod 12" Dual Loaded Ported Subwoofer Enclosure for 150 shipped to my door. 2000W peak power (600W RMS)

or

MTX - 10" Dual 2-Ohm Subwoofers with Enclosure for 140 shipped to my door. 1350W peak power (450W RMS).

I always hear that sony does not make very good subs, so I was just wondering what you guys thought.

Also, I have a Kenwood 600W Class D Mono Amplifier with Variable Crossover.

Thanks

Just some food for thought here:

I bought a Phoenix Gold RSD12 on Amazon.com for like $45 with free shipping. It is an awesome sub. It reminds me of the really great stuff that was coming out in the 1990's. It's not real flashy, but it is well built and it pounds hard. Amazon also had a bunch of enclosures for cheap. You could probably get a sub and box shipped for under a bill.

Of the two options you listed, I'd go with the MTX stuff, although neither is a great choice. Sony is junk, and I would stay away from ported enclosures that aren't custom built for your vehicle. They also typically require a great deal more cubic feet.

Well another reason I wanted to buy from best buy was I have like 60$ in reward zone money, and like 4 gift cards, so it would basically be free.

I only have a cheap 12" Xtreme sub in my car right now that my brother gave me until I buy something better. Would the MTX sound noticeably better and louder than the 12 I have now?

Hey Pete, I noticed you are from Toledo. I have a semi old-school Orion XTREME PRO 12" DVC with 4-ohm coils (wired in parallel for 2ohm operation) mounted in a small sealed box, plus a spare slot-ported box that I'll throw in for $100 if you want to drive an hour to Sandusky and pick it up. It's been sitting in my garage on a shelf for ever now, and I keep thinking I'm going to use it again, but I have a company car now and it's a no-no. This was part of ther sub series right before DEI took over Orion (and Profile took over Soundstream) and things went to ****. Could send pics if you like.

I haven't ran the sub in 3+ years; and when I did, I had it for about a year in my '99 Toyota Solara off of aSoundstream Rubicon 501 mono amp. It sounds great in both boxes; I personally like it in a sealed box better, and it always could handle WAY more than what I gave it...old Orion subs were underrated and still a ton better than even the decent subs you buy at big box stores. In the F150 from my signature, I ran it for about a month off of an Orion XTR500 amp in an all Orion/Soundstream system that on a side note, consisted of Cobalts in doors/pillars, and a pair of XTR10's in a custom built wedge, all powered by a MASSIVE old school Soundstream Reference 705S 5 channel amp.

No hurt feelings if you're not interested...haha, just thought I'd throw it out there. Out of the 2 you listed though, I would go with the MTX; I have some MTX marine speakers on my boat and am very pleased.

Neither... For cheap subs I love Kickers. You can get a Kicker CVR 10" or 12" for around $65 new. I beat the hell out of mine and never had any problems.

I want to hook it up to my AQ3500D amp and see how it likes 3500 watts rms

Funny you said AQ3500, I'm hookin one up to my 18" BTL. :D . A kicker will fail on 3500 though. :ermm: I don't like kicker though so what do I know. :p

Okay, after further review, I've changed my mind. With a 600 watt Kenwood (which is a pretty optimistic wattage rating), you probably want to drive one sub. After looking at Best Buy's online selection, I'd have to recommend these:

Sub:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sony+-+Xplod+12%22+Single-Voice-Coil+4-Ohm+Subwoofer/9202481.p?id=1218057724056&skuId=9202481

Enclosure:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Atrend+-+12%22+Single+Ported+Subwoofer+Enclosure+-+Charcoal/9026868.p?skuId=9026868&id=1218009783153#tabbed-customerreviews

The Sony subs in the pre-loaded box are junk. The one I linked is actually pretty good. One good sub is better than two chitty ones. As for the enclosure, you'll need a little piece of 3/4" MDF, some wood glue or caulking, screws, and some poly-fill. You can get everything at Lowes (you may have to hit WalMart for the poly-fill). I would cut the carpet away from around the port and glue and screw an MDF plug over the top to make it a sealed box. I would then fill the box with poly-fill and install the sub. That should give you a nice, hard hitting sub for about the same money you would have spent on the other stuff.

don't EVER buy sony car audio except for the decks and even then only if you can't find anything else in your price range

Save up your money and get an Alpine Type R 10" sub or 12". Those sound way better than anything listed in this thread and will outlast any of those subs also, trust me ive owned all different types including that sony 12" sub shown and they just dont last. If you were closer id sell you my 2 kicker comp cvr 12's in a ported box for $150

I've heard the sub in my link, and it actually sounds pretty good. Normally I would agree with you, but that was the best thing that Best Buy carried. I have to disagree about their head units, though. I've owned a couple different Sony head units and they really sucked. I wouldn't buy anything but a Pioneer, but that's just my preference.

best buy carries subs way better than that. Maybe for that price range it might be the best, but i know i have purchased alpine subs and rockford subs (which rockford p2 10's in rockfords ported box absolutely slams hard. It shocked me)

Yeah, I was trying to stay in his budget, and I was looking at what they had online. They might have better stuff in the store, but I doubt they have a sub much better than that for that price. Personally, I would never buy anything from a retailer like Best Buy, but he has a deal there, so that's what I was looking at.

you misunderstood what i said, sony is a last resort at a brand name if you can't find anything else in your price range. i have pioneer premier decks in both my trucks and in my girls car;)

as for the subs go with those mtx's those two mtx 10s will put any of the sonys best buy sells to shame

Thanks for all the imput guys, I appreciate it.

If I bought the MTX 10's, would I be able to run a 500W 12" Xtreme on top of the 10's with my AMP?

don't even bother with the xtreme, you said it yourself its a cheap sub and mixing and matching subs does not help with sound quality.

You'd be surprised how good it really sounds. Would my AMP handle both subs?

Just because they say "MTX", it doesn't necessarily make them better than the Sony sub that I linked. The fact that it's two 10 inch subs and a box for $150 tells me that the subs are probably the lowest end that MTX offers. In my experience, "loaded" boxes are usually loaded with crap. I'd take that higher end Sony sub all day long.

To the OP -- Your Kenwood amp is going to have enough trouble running one 12" sub, let alone a 12" and two 10"s. I'm guessing that your amp is only 4 ohm stable, so you'd have to wire three subs in series to keep your amp safe. If you do that, your subs would be way under-driven. Go with a single quality 12" sub and you'll be much happier, IMHO.

I have a Pioneer deh headunit (sounds REALLY nice) and as far as a sub, Im running a Roxford Fosgate MTX Punch P1 single 12" in a ported box. I saw it at a garage sale for $10, so I figured for the price it was worth a shot.

It actually has quite some kick to it. It's 300w peak 150w rms, and im running a 300w alpine mono amp. It gets the job done for some bass in the firechicken.

My dads friend competes in stereo competitions and is REALLY good with stereo and builds custom boxes. He's going to build me one to fit in the trunk of my car for free and im going to have him make it for twin 10's. My friend had twin kenwood 10's and the thing kicked @ss all across the board.

Woah....Roxford Fosgate MTX Punch P1 single 12"....sounds loud!!!

01-11-2010, 04:58 AM
You guys are dicks lol. I never said I was a car audio guru. I actually don't know anything about car audio. All I know is what I visually see on it.

The face of the sub is black... and says "p1" It also has a ring around the sub that says roxford fosgate. (I looked up the p1 sub and it is in fact a roxford fosgate)

I was bored one day, and unbolted the woofer. the back side is red and the mtx logo is stamped in the back face of it.
So you explain to me, experts. lol

F-16Guy
01-11-2010, 06:36 AM
It sounds like someone put a Fosgate rubber trim ring on an MTX sub. The sub itself is probably an MTX if it's labeled on the magnet.

01-11-2010, 01:23 PM
Yeah but the face of the sub, the plastic part in the rubber ring, says p1 and is black. Roxford Fosgate makes the punch p1. Thats what has me so confused..
Im thinking maybe MTX manufactures that specific sub for roxford fosgate??

I've always been pretty partial to the first generation Solo-Barics. The hardest hitting, cleanest subs I've ever personally heard were in a Ford Escort GT hatchback that a buddy and I put together. It was a pair of old (old now, but not back then) Kicker Competition 12s -- the kind with a black cone with gold "Kicker" lettering on the dust cover. We pushed them with a Metro Sound amp. Really clean and lots of excursion. I had a pair of Orion XTR3 10" subs in my 1986 Z-28 that came pretty close to his setup. Those Orions were great subs, too. I've always preferred the sound of those pulp cones.

01-12-2010, 01:37 PM
This isn't a real shot of mine, but the exact same one I have.
It's identical to this, same plastic trim ring and everything.

The back part by the magnet has the MTX logo on it though?

A guy i use to work with had two 10" solo barics when they first came out (i assume first gen but not sure), he had a box specifically made and a fosgate amp. They were in a gmc jimmy or something to that take.

I knew be blew his back window out once with them, they were too loud for me to sit in his truck. They actually hurt my ears
