what do you mean beat a 450? drag,mx,cross country,tt???? they are too many variables to come to an absolute answer. yes a well built 400 with a good rider will bet a 450 with a not so good rider. it just depends on how your bike is set up for what kind of riding you are doing, and who against!

I can beat stock 450R's in a dead drag any day, and even running a bone stock suspension i had quite a few YFZ 450's that couldnt run me down racing moto.......

i won a 450 class drag race on my kx when it was stock the 250fs are quick and get alot of there power to the ground. i could be a 400ex on the back tire lol

when i still had a 400ex motor in mine it had a very good port job sparks mx cam and exhuast as well as a 39mm carb and a high comp 416 i pull over 10 lengths on a piped and chipped yfz that made 48hp and i was stock geared

With a Hotcams stage 1 cam, Sparks timing advance key, K&N, removed air box lid and a full Pro Circuit exhaust, I was stomping a piped 660 with a more experienced rider.

A built 400 can beat a 450 in alot of cases. The problem you are going to run into is heat. The built 400 can only run so long with the stock cooling system without torching the motor. I mean don't get me wrong, 400's have almost bullet proof motors, but when they get too hot, their performance drops. If you go with 460 stroker, you should upgrade your cooling system. Unless you only plan on drag racing for a few seconds at a time, then letting it cool.

The answer to the question is a 450 with more mods than a pipe.

A 400EX isn't going to do it.

The mod price list to get close would be more than the cost of a nice used 450.

A 400EX is a great trail bike (love mine) but it is an EX... not an R... and there is no point in trying to make it one.

If you want a good trail machine, fine...

But if you are racing bikes and YFZ's... you are going to be bored to tears trying to do anything else with it.

thats well said and has its place but on the other hand i only have 28- 2900 into my bike total and i can toast 450s in a drag, i have raced a sand dune mx track against all 450s and bigger and came out in 6th out of 40. only "real" race ever. so thats not entirely true.

When I was building the engine for mine a couple years ago, many people told me to not waste my time--that a 400ex wouldn't be able to keep up with a 450 (stock, let alone modified) no matter what I did.

I went against the grain and built the ol' EX, and I'm glad I did. I'll never get tired of people walking up to my quad and looking it over to try and figure out whats been done to it. It has impressed everyone I ride with. 400ex reliability and handling with power equal to a HRC equipped 450 and 450 brakes--the best of both worlds.:macho

what i love most is that i rode in the snow all day and held it wide open most of the day and it still ran strong. my friends 450 was having issues and would stay running. we couldnt really race cause the snow was so deep but it was fun.

And I see nothing wrong with that at all.

I just don't like the assumption that you can take a 400EX and make a "cheap" 450-killer.

It's cheaper just to go the 450 route than it is to make the 400EX more competitive with a stock 450.

If that were not true, non-factory riders would still be racing 400EX's.

its not true at all them guys dont care about money and they dont ride stock 450s either, they have fully built race machines, and the only reason is, they have double the power. a 460 stroker is still gonna be slower than a well built 450.
now on the other hand my ex out handles a 450 in any situation. so they both have there qualities. it can has and will be done. like stated there is too many variables to give an exact answer. but yes it can happen

This is a debate that will go on and on. I know I was on the fence about putting a 440 kit into my 400 and piping it but when I started looking at how much it was going to be once it was all said and done I just decided to buy a used 450 r. I picked up an 04 that was piped and jetted for 2k. It was a screaming deal and I couldnt be happier not many dunes I cant tackle now. I mostly ride trails in Washington and dunes in Oregon. I will say the 400 is a hell of a lot better bike in the trails mostly due to reverse (damn trees) but they both have their high points. Either way your riding a Honda and that is all that matters.
