The YZ's are still in production and since 2005 have really been the top 2-stroke. I don't think the CR line changed much between 2000 to when they stopped. The RM's may have had some slight changes. If you go YZ250, get a 2005 and after, that is when they went to aluminum frame. 2006 and up is supposed to be the best years for the YZ250.

for racing u would prob be better with a 125 but personaly i dont like 125s theres not enough torque, if ure just play riding go way id go with a yz250 or rm250 the kx 250s seem to have a strong but narrow powerband and get the newest bike u can afford

i'd stay away from 98-2000 cr 125 & 250's 2001 and up are great

suzuki rm's have good power but it takes getting used to you sit foward alot more

Kawasaki's i like the best supposed to have best power valve system and they seem to have alot of torque with just a pipe

yamaha are told to be the best all around 2 strokes had 9? yz 125 and a 2000 yz 250 and wasn't impressed

only ktm experience in a mx bike was a 94 ktm 250 bored way over and had a sticky throttle rode it for 3 minutes before i went thru a barbed wire fence in 3rd gear had lots of power lol

i've got a 2000 kx 125 i'd sale ya if your thru Indiana any time

I see you're from Pa. If you're dead set on a 125, check the Pa craigslist and pennswoods.net. For $1300 there are tons of 125's in that price range. As far as all the modern upgrades...

01 and up for RM's, 02 and up for YZ's, 05 and up for KTM's (04 and under aren't too bad, but the suspension is much better on the 05+), KX 03 and up, Cr 02 and up. Almost all parts are interchangeable for the years through current production models, so you have plenty of parts to choose from if need be. 2005 was a great year for 250's. Honestly, there wasn't a bad one, just pick your favorite color. I honestly have trouble picking a favorite 250. I really like the handling on the RM's but I think the YZ has a better overall package and feel. KTM has a monster power plant, but takes a lot of getting used to handling and ergonomic wise, this would be why I got rid of mine. For $1300 you may be able to score some earlier model 250's, but personally I'd try to stay above these years. If you can get an aluminum framed bike, even better. Check the pittsburgh, state college, and other major cities for bikes. I scrolled through most of them the other day (my cousin is about the age for a 65) and the pages were just loaded with 125's. Rather nice one's infact. If you have the money 250F's are going pretty cheap as well. 07's for around $2200 and 08's for $2600.

and I can tell you the first yz is way over priced..

Just keep searching. There are some serious deals on 125's out there. The one's I posted are just what I found real quick, but a buddy of mine snagged up an 05 yz 125 with some moderate work done to it for $1400 on craigslist.

id stay away from any used 4 stroke unless its the yamaha

id personally go with a 96 cr 125 or 250 or a 01 and newer cr 125 or 250, durable bikes

dont buy an 04 kx250f. unless you want a time bomb.

i'll shoot another warning out to you. i bought a bike at the end of 08 and only rode my mx quad once in 09. lookout once you get the hang of a bike they're fun. you can check out this link
http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/mcy/1552787265.html i'd probably get a two-smoker, but 4-strokes are easier to jump.
do you have any bike experience, are you gonna mx or trail ride?
i don't think you could go wrong with that cr 250, plus hondas always seem to be easier to resell, not that they're better, but u know...

SRH

id go for the 03 cr 250, a 125 is kinda harder to ride unless your so inexpirienced riding you dont know how to handle the bike... 250 has alot more grunt, a 125 your on it hardcore to get around the track

Indeed it does.

yzf's are good overall bikes. I can't really say I have any major complaints of mine, but I like my kxf a lot better. Power comes on really stronger through the mid range and has quite a bit of over rev up top. Definitely handles a lot better and doesn't have the "top heavy" feel of the steel framed yzf.

Honestly, from roughly 2003 and up there it's really a bad bike unless you get into some early production thumpers. Most of them are just ridden and never taken care, hence why they pop so often. Honda's often have the worst valve issues, but a set of copper seats and some ti valves and you're good to go. If you're dead set on a 2 stroke, try to ride a 125 and a 250 first. Sometimes a 250 can be a little much for someone without any bike experience. The 125 is going to be an easier bike to ride and will surely give your left hand a workout.

$1500-$2000 max. There's an 05 kxf here locally that was listed for $1600 and the seller ended up letting it go for $1300 to a friend of mine. If it's the one I'm thinking you're looking at, I have a full stock exhaust in good condition if you're interested. Looks like it could use a good cleaning, but I wouldn't pay $2000 for it.

So you're looking for a bike or not? I'm slightly confused. There were a few RMZ's online for great prices. One was an 07 $1900, another 07 for $2200, and an 08 for $2600. Personally I like the rmz's almost as much as the kxf's. Bascially the same motor up until 07. I'll keep an eye out for yah though. How far you willing to travel and spend?

You can find a nice 250F in that range. 07 or 08 is what you'd be looking there. 450 wise probably an 05 or 06.

I really should be on a 450, but as long as I'm racing I'll be on a 250F. I don't really want to race 450's up here. 250 isn't much better, but atleast half of the goons can somewhat control a 250.

thats just it i dont want to be on a 450 if i decided to start woods racing this year with my friends.
