My oldest son got a nice present from Santa....

http://www.lashermxracing.com/xmas/xmas.html

He liked the Walsh 250R chassis I got last summer, but wants a 4 stroke motor. So...he will have to build this 2009 Walsh CRF (candy red).

looks pretty nice. Nothing better than new. Walsh really puts alot of gussets in those frames. Any idea on how much all of that weighs? How much lead time to get a new frame from Walsh?

So far we only got the frame and flip top sub frame. They came in two boxes...so weight wise...

Frame box was 56 lbs
Sub Frame box was 14 lbs

Lead time....for this was about a week. That was one of the deciding factors between used/new, since it was a gift from Santa. I needed it by X-mas.

The frame he had in stock, just needed powdercoating. The sub frame he built that week, maybe a day or two plus coating.

The pics don't do it justice. This thing is sharp. I am going to send my Walsh 250R frame to him for a check up and coating (candy blue) this winter.

I am sure there are other frames might be lighter, but Walsh stuff will last, in my experience.

I raced an 89 250R for years, throwing all kinds of mods to it. But this past summer I finally picked up a full Walsh 250R and kick myself for not doing it sooner.

So there were two choices...another Walsh 250R chassis or a Walsh CRF hybrid. He wanted a 4 stroke.

My wife and I looked a couple used and came really close to buying them, but we think it would be better for our son to build his own, than handing him a full quad.

Yeah...Santa can be pretty dumb when it comes to spending habits on quads.

Nope...I have a 6 year waiting. He only likes riding his Kasea 90 in the yard. My oldest was the same way. Did not want to race until he could be on the bigger quads.

That removable frame rail is a great feature. I think others should do that besides KTM.

I cannot wait for the rest of the chassis to be here. (need to sell my banshee).

I told my son that I hate walking into the garage now. My ugly Walsh 250R with a busted motor sitting in the corner.

From my understanding, the removable frame rail allows the chassis to be lower (similar to 250R) while still having the taller crf motor.

No clue....these 4 strokes are new to me.

thats what my old man did with me too except my first hybrid, he handed me a 400ex and a welder lol. its great that u support him. its an expensive hobby, but is friggin amazing what you learn along the way by doing things yourself. kudos to you man! also the removable frame rail it hink is so you can take the top end of the motor apart without taking it out of the frame. i wish my prp had that, i made a spreader out of a turn buckle to get the extra fraction of an inch to get the head off. its a great idea walsh had there. gonna be an amazing build...i can feel it, and as i said before pics pics pics!

You will see it next season!

Our pits at the races will have a 02 Walsh 250R and a 09 Walsh CRF.

If my son puts in the effort!

That Walsh is sharp! What are you going to use for a radiator? I don't think Walsh makes the 250R style radiator anymore. On my 01 Walsh R there were no mounts for stock style radiator shrouds. So I had to run his radiator or I guess you could weld shrouds to a stock radiator.

how long did you have to wait for the frame ? My local shop was tellin me about a customer that wanted a new walsh frame and was looking at over a year wait for mike to build it

We had that one in stock. We can build New frames right now within a few weeks. We also have most of the chassis parts in stock. If any of you are interested in a frame or have any chassis questions give me a call on my cell any time. thanks, Jeff 315-436-6771

I believe they have the billet upper frame rail piece, to remove it when doing a top end in the bike without having to remove the motor from the frame.

You have a PM by the way!

Radiator - Walsh said they don't make them anymore, but they did mention Fluidyne. They can still make shrouds/fins I was told.

This was a last minute X-mas gift for my son. Walsh having the frame in stock was big part of the decision. I picked up a used Walsh 250R this summer and can't believe the handling. My son wanted a 4 stroke to race and I saw no reason in buying a used production quad, then spending month modifying it for racing. So my wife and I looked at a couple used Walsh CRF's for sale and almost brought one. But in the end, we thought my son will get more enjoyment out of building one from the ground up.

Originally I thought about using all my current 250R parts from the 89 he raced this past summer. But this frame uses 450R parts, which is fine, because the 250R parts I would use need to be rebuilt as well. Heck...we don't know which year motor to use...probably the 05+ years.

I have raced on/off since 1999 and now with him getting into MX racing, I have an excuse to race again. So there is some selfishness to this decision.

He is really lucky that I learned my lesson years ago with racing. Back when I started, 250R were the only thing at the track. I brought a used 89 250R and spend tons of money/time building it to be a decent racer. Back then, a Walsh chassis was a pipe dream, but I really did not think there was that much difference. Boy was I wrong! Being able to switch between an 89 250R and the Walsh 250R really opened eyes and I kick myself for not doing it sooner.

But he will have part out the 89 250R to buy the parts needed to build this CRF. So it is up to him to put the effort in. I have my Walsh (which he did not want to ride...2 stroke) which I might let him borrow until he finishes the CRF.
