i was thinking inbetween one of the oil lines i could run a oil temp gauge but im not sure if i should run it on the pressure line or the return line? anyone got any intrest in this or wana figure something out?

The pressure line to the cooler should be the hottest oil, so I would think that's where you'd want it. You could install a barbed "T" fitting and plumb in a mechanical gauge with a capillary tube. Jeggs has them on sale for $29.99, but you could probably find one cheaper at an auto parts store. I'm not sure how you're trying to do it, but that's one thought.

are you familiar with the XR's Only temp gauge?
I realize you were asking about an in-line gauge, and this is not in-line,
but it is "in-tank".
lots easier, reasonably priced, and no leaks...

You can get one here: http://www.xrsonly.com/content/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=1010&category_id=104&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=89

It's not the biggest bargain when said and done since they ream you on the shipping, but it's definitely a "must have" mod for the 400EX. It's nice to be able to look down and glance to see if the motor has warmed up to operating temp yet before you starting ripping on the motor. Also great to see if you are getting it too hot and need to cool it down.

I marked mine with a Sharpie to indicate the 400EX's temperature zones. Anything under the green zone, the motor is still warming up. If it's in the green zone, it's in the safe/normal operating temperature, and if it gets into the red zone it's starting to get hot (nearing 300 is death LOL).
