my dad is letting me trade him my 300ex for his 250r so i can comtinue racing this upcoming season. the r needs a clutch, and he says he wants me to do a top end job. its all original parts but it starts and runs perfect. has plenty of compression. what should i do? i found a clutch on rocky mountan atv for 40 bucks. tusk is the brand. im on a 250$ budget so i cant go crazy guys even though id love to :(

250r's are much faster than 300ex!!!!!! Do the trade!!!!! If the R has good compression, It dones not need a top end!! YOu will be very happy

you can usually turn an adjustor to make them firmer, or softer. but the squeak is prolly just dry bushings or ball joints.

hope you can work the powerband well in the turns. I heard if you can do that, then you will dominate on a 250r. Also if you want to beef up the top motor mount. I have a Laeger's top motor mount in my shed ill sell for $50 shipped. It is WAY nicer than the stockers. I also have some other parts for sale also

You need to search for Neils (C-Leigh Racing) clutch mod. You do it and you'll be O.K. There's no need to spend big bucks for a clutch. I can't remember the whole setup, but its something like, you take one fiber out and put in a fiber from a 400EX. That makes all the plates thicker, and you use CR500 springs etc. Like I said, you need to do a search for it.

Here ya go, I searched it for ya and just pasted it.
When you slip a clutch enough to discolor the metal plates, it warpped those thin plates out of shape, so now they a not flat like they were when new.
It dont take a plate to be warpped very much to cause a clutch to not disengauge after the engines hot.
Your going to need all new plates, fiber & metal.
Heres the clutch mod.
CR500 springs
1 400EX metal plate to replace one of the 250R plates
6 of the aluminum washers like go on the transmission drain bolt
When you do this mod & you got to get new fiber plates anyways, in makes no difference if you get a high priced set of fiber plates or the cheapest you can find, cause slipping is over.
Pull one of the 250R metal plates out & then take the 400EX metal plate & put it in the middle of the whole clutch pack.
Install the CR500 springs & then on the outside between the spring & presure plate bolt, put one washer on each spring, aline them all up & tighten the bolts down evenly between each other.
Now, adjust your clutch lever adjuster all the way in & then adjust the cable end where it mounts to the side of the engine to take just about all of the play out of the cable & lever.
Once you run the engine some & all the new clutch stuff gets seated, may need to readjust the cable end on the engine just a little bit more or you could just fine tune with the adjuster at the lever.

I'm not gonna say that you need it, but if you are replacing the clutch in it......I say why not.

just reading the thread- what does neils clutch mod do? what is the reason for /benefit of doing it?
does it help slippage if your motor is too powerful?
wouldn't make the clutch pull heavier with the 500 springs?
thanks in advance for the info
