i have a 2001 400ex and recently bought a 2005 motor and put it in today but the splines on the sprocket dont line up, if i buy a sprocket for an 05 will the teeth line up with the chain? 2nd question how is reverse engaged, i noticed the little lever on the bottom of the motor but what do i have to do to shift into reverse? thanks in advance.

To shift into you reverse you turn a knob and then push down on the shifter as if you were gearing down. You might wanna look into the knob for the reverse engagement

I thought once about doing this myself for the reverse.
I just never found an engine or bottom end for a reasonable price.
I bet the reverse engagement just requires that the lever you found be held in one direction as you downshift.
If so, if I were you I swear I would do a little research and figure out if there is any way you can borrow the engagement off of a KFX 450R.
It's the bomb!

Well, that didn't work...
So do a google image search and look until you see a picture of the right handlebar.
Your hands never come off the bars for this.
It has a thumb lever right by the throttle.
Cable operates the reverse lever so you can shift down into reverse.

I'm interested to hear the solution to your question. I'm not trying to hijack your thread but this goes along with it. Do you think $125 is worth it for a 2005 bottom end (just case), transmission and connecting rod? If so, could I take everything else off my 2001 to make it complete?

I know you didn't ask me, but I'll answer with my opinion anyways...
If it is known-good... HECK YES!!!
I was finding them for like over $600 just for the bottom end... sight unseen (ebay).
I'd buy it up... get a bolt-on bore kit (cylinder & pistion) pick up a reworked ported head, and a new set of hot cams. Then I'd put that in and sell the complete 2001 engine. I'm thinking you could almost break even.
If I could have found a bottom for that price I would have just snatched it up, even if I just kept it around until I needed to go into the stocker top end. Then I would have swapped bottoms while the top was off for service.

thanks guys. as for the other question though even though the splines on the inside of the sprocket are different (between the 01 and 05 engines) will the teeth on a 05 sprocket fit the chain on my 01 400 (now 440)?

I would guess they both use the same 520 o-ring chain... so I would guess yes.
Cross-reference the OEM chain part numbers or check an aftermarket chain.

Why did you have to change out the starter? You would think they would be the same.
