after repairing and welding 2 spots on the frame. Then sanding and primering

1718111327

This bike has Ohlin's piggyback shocks all around (which were rebuilt and tuned by Litz in Blountville TN) and a FMF full system. It also has DG bumper, grab bar, nerf bars, center skid and Renthal handle bars. I'm not sure of the manufacturer yet but it has a +4 rear axle and Douglas wheels all around with Razr tires. I also had to track down a factory nose piece to replace the Black one and get a Ceet blue seat cover for it.

I am currently waiting on the engine to come back from CT Racing. They are using a 74mm Kawasaki piston (67mm is stock) for mine. I don't know what the actuall cc will be but it's 70mm stroke x 74mm bore if somebody wants to figure it up. They are also doing TT style porting with 13.5/1 compression and a 41.5mm carb. He says it will be a beast when I get it back. I can't wait.

74X70 makes 300.8cc. It should definetly be a beast! What piston is that from do you know? Nice build by the way.

Thanks for figuring up the CC and thanks for the compliment. As for the piston, in not sure what it's for but I try to find out for you.

I see u have a 87 too. I love these bikes. I can't wait to try to lay the smack down on some of these new thumpers.

are you going to keep the fmf pipe or get another? I think a power pros or ftz pipe would be better suited to the porting and other mods your doing. The fmf will hold it back for sure.

f150dan
01-03-2010, 09:53 PM
CT told me the latter FMF pipes were ok but the earlier ones suck. I don't really know which one I've got so I'm just going to see how it runs and go from there. I would really like to get a Dr.Q pipe for it one day but I will check them all out and try to do research and see what's best for my setup. CT says they make a killer pipe.

yeah the ct pipe is made by power pros i think. And yeah it would be stronger than the fmf!

Should I run gold wheels on this bike? I like how they look but they are hard to find. Does anybody know where to get them? Or should I have my Douglas wheels annodized gold? Or just leave them alone and not worry about it?

f150dan

I got a little more work done on the bike this afternoon. I took the netting out of the DG nerf bars. Then I cleaned them up and redyed the nylon netting using royal blue Rit dye. I think they came out pretty good. I will replace them one day but I just wanted something to do so I tried restoring them.

You cant really tell in some of the pics but the factory rear fenders are faded some, so I just scored a brand new set Maier rear fenders to match the fronts for $165.00. I cant wait to get them so I can put the rear decals on and see how it all looks together.

1718111336

Also, I should be getting the jug back from CT by friday. Then the bottom end has to go off to the local machine shop and be opened up for the new big sleeve.:D I am getting very excited now.

I need to get a new chain (maybe a yellow anodized one off ebay) along with new sprockets. CT said to run minimum of 14-38 with this motor. I might go 14-36 but im not sure yet. I would still like to get a aluminum airbox and new K&N filter. And I still need to fill and bleed all brakes on the the bike too. I'm slowly but surely getting it back together

f150dan
02-22-2010, 06:24 PM
I just ordered a Supersprox 14t lightweight front cog and a aluminum Tag 38t rear sprocket along with a new EK O-ring chain. I also picked up a yellow VP fuel jug to hold the pre-mix for this quad. I would still like to get an aluminum airbox and K&N for it, but I haven't found one yet.

1718111337

f150dan

I got the jug back and noticed that he didn't got to the full 74mm bore like I was wanting at first. He went 72mm to give me room to freshen it up in the future. That's ok as long as it still runs good. I just spent a little more money on this bike. I found a NIB Dr. Q full system exhaust setup to run on this bike to try to sqeeze all the power I can out of it.

Here is a pic of a Dr.Q pipe installed on a Lt500 just incase you haven't ever seen one before

I'm not really a Hotwheels collector or anything, but when I saw this on eBay I just had to have it.

1718111339

it's a 87 Hotwheels of the Suzuki Quadracer. I like it because the year is correct and it just so happened to be the only one I saw with yellow fenders, blue seat, and gold wheels. I think it will look great hanging on my work bench in a protective case. What do u think?

Wow man, this was an awesome resto. I hope to be able to find a cheap LT250R this summer and do something similar.

Just curious as to how much you paid for it originally? Up here in Canada the prices for used quads are ridiculous, I will be looking to get something from NY or MI.

A few things still on my "to do" list for this bike is to order some of the custom carbon fiber V2 reed's made for a '87 zilla from Tuders Performance and get a new clutch with billet clutch basket. Then I wanna shave some weight off of it so I'm gonna replace the factory front spindles with a aluminum set from a z400. They are a direct fit to the quadracer if u run upper ball joints on the upper and lower A-arms. You have to run the z400 hubs with them after that though which changes the lug pattern. I also read that yfz450 dual piston front brake calipers are a direct replacement for the z400 calipers so if I am switching hubs and spindles, I might as well switch calipers too. After I do that I wanna find a aluminum rear brake hub since the factory one is steel.

I stopped in Dave's machine shop today to get an update on my bottom end. He just recieved a bottom end gasket set and crank bearings and seals that he ordered. He asked me if it was ok to work on and lighten the flywheel, so I just said go for it. Is ther anything in particular I should check or look for or modify in the bottom end while he has it apart.

that a downhill race quad? and how do you get it back up the hill in a truck around the other side? LOL j/k. whats up with the CT big bore motor? I'm curious how they did it but I think I'd rather have a stroker personally but their the builder not me so I dunno much.

Shearer make some sick pipes, I believe he builds qs pipes. I want an AAEN or Shearer depending on price point I will likely get the AAEN, I have some sorta FMF on mine.

also how much is CT charging for the engine work? I would love to get a sick motor setup in mine. would really prefer a hybrid at that point I think but finding a cheap zilla motor was a one time deal I put off causing my buddy to let it go somewhere else :(

Eventually I'm thinking about adding a Honda crank to the bottom end to get 2mm more stroke.

lmk how that works out. I really wanna do something to get it to a 310cc just for the heck of it lol. I think I put pix up of mine, if not, I'll make sure I do at some point. I have a thread in the pic section on QRHQ.

thanks for the help on the costs. if it's over $1,000 I'll be looking at a zilla hybrid lol

I decided to powder coat the wheels I've already got gold, so I went ahead and ordered the paint. It's Interpon Golden Gauge. It should be here next week. I'll paint a sample first, and if I like the results I'll sandblast paint and cook the wheels.

I can't wait and will be sure to post pics. I'm hoping for that "stock" old school look.

My next purchase will probably be a '87 Lt500 intake boot because, even though I already have a brand new Lt250 boot, I'm not sure I can stretch it around the 41.5mm carb.

To try to squeeze all the power I can out of this bike, I would like to try the custom built V-Force reeds (http://www.tudorsperformance.com/tudors_new_009.htm) from Tudor's Performance.

Then, I eventually wanna get a nice aftermarket steering stem (http://www.burgardcycle.com/xc2/product.php?productid=136&cat=19&page=1). They just look cool and my factory stem is "tweaked" just a little bit at the top. You can't tell until you remove it, but it will bug me until I replace it.

Also to shave a few pounds, besides me going on a diet, I want z400 front spindles since they are aluminum with these billet rear hubs (http://www.lsracing.com/suzuki-z400-taper-loc-rear-wheel-hubs-suzuki-z400-and-kawasaki-kfx400.305.25.atv-utv-racing) from LSR to match in the back and I want to get a aluminum brake hub (http://www.lsracing.com/suzuki-lt250-lt500-billet-disk-brake-hub-suzuki-lt250.71.24.atv-utv-racing) from LSR.

Never ending project but that's my dream setup anyway. One piece at a time I guess.

If I remember right, the LT500 has a conventional shock (angled forward instead of backward like your Full-Floater), and the airbox is behind the shock, like on my 92 LT250. If so, the airboot wouldn't work for your 87 LT. Something for you to double-check if you haven't already. I put a 38mm carb on my LT, have to heat the boot in hot water to get it over the carb! Barely fits over mine, so don't think that would work for your 41.5mm.

Lookin good on the rebuild!

I ran into a problem last night building the engine. Got the bottom end assembled and sealed up, then started on piston and jug. The ATC 72mm piston I'm planning on using is a bit too narrow inside where the rod sides into it. It doesn't allow room for the thrust washers. It will fit and work fine if I leave them out but I'm not sure about doing that. Gotta call Allen at CT to find out what he thinks or if that was something he overlooked.

My plan is to take piston to machine shop to open it up to Suzuki specs but I'll wait and see what he says.

f150dan
04-30-2012, 06:35 PM
I did a little research, the '87 Lt250r wrist pin bearing is 18x23x24mm and it's too wide to fit into the ATC Honda piston with the thrust washers. I cant just use a Honda wrist pin bearing because it measures 18x22x23mm so even though it's shorter, it's too small to fit Lt250 rod.

Like I posted earlier, was planning on just taking piston to machine shop to mill it out a little but that would make it more complicated to freshen up with new piston in future if need be. So I think I found an easy alternative. A wrist pin bearing For a 77-99 RM250 measures 18x23x22mm so it's correct size for rod and it's 2mm shorter so it should allow enough room for the 2 thrust washers and proper tolerance.

My local Atv shop had one in stock so I picked it up but haven't had time to install it yet. I hope it works and I'll keep you updated.

Thanks for the encouragement. I got the engine sealed up finally. Now I can actually feel what 13.5/1 compression is gonna be like. (I'm parking this thing on a hill as much as possible)

1718111361

Then ran into a minor problem of a bearing missing from the power valve assembly. I had to order it this after and wait, yet again, on shipping. That's what happens though when you've had a project torn down for this long and had it at 2 different shops over time.

It's slowly but surely coming to life though.

08-08-2012, 08:00 PM
Thanks, this thing is a beast. I forgot how much I like the smell of pre-mix 110. After running a tank of fuel through it a bit rich and fat oil mixture, it's time to lean it out a bit. I went from 182 main to 178 along with a new spark plug.

I think I had Allen at CT go a bit too far with the port work. If I had to do it over again, I would want a good all-around port job. The powerband is very high and like a light switch (on or off). No matter what gear, when it's in it's power it's either spinning or raring up.

I did outrun my buddies Trinity 295 Honda 250r though so very glad about that. We topped them out on that run. He has a trail tech vapor speedo and topped out at 96mph in 6th gear. Mine just kept pulling away from him in 5th. My iPhone4 said 104mph but was hard to read at that speed so not sure though.

I adjusted the powervalve today. Set it a 1 1/4 turns CCW. That helped smooth out the very high "light switch" powerband this bike had and makes the HP a bit more manageable.

Still practicing my launches for the Atv drags coming up. 2nd gear dumps from WOT seem to be the ticket so far.

The radiator on this bike is aluminum but somebody in its past decided to spray paint it black. Today I decided to drain and pull the radiator so I can strip the paint off of it and try to polish it up a bit. I used airplane stripper to get paint off

I didn't know the fins were dented and bent so bad until I stripped the black paint off. I'm going to try to straighten them the best I can then start polishing.

I can't believe, with how far I tore this bike apart, that I didn't know until now it had tapered carrier bearings.

They weren't sloppy until now so I didn't mess with them. I had a extra set of single row carrier bearings and seals from my z400 that was going to install. What a surprise when I slid that axle out and popped the seals.

I'm glad though because I think they have alot more load rating

What did you end up doing for the wrist pin bearing? And is the piston your using a Honda TRX/ATC 250R 72mm Big Bore Piston?

Yea, the piston is a 72mm piston made for a Honda ATC 250r and I had to use a Suzuki RM250 wrist pin bearing. Works great.

Since I discovered the factory flywheel coming apart on this ole quad, I replaced it with a lightened and balanced flywheel
from Summit Performance in FL.

I heard welding will help make it last. Nice Quadracer by the way

Nice to see 2 stroke quads still exist!

2nd ride after installing the new flywheel, it sheared the key. Must not have been seated properly. Hopefully got that fixed after making new key cause we got another riding trip in the morning

Blew a head gasket on this thing today during a snow ride. I'm hoping that's what it is anyway, I haven't torn into it yet.

Anybody got any suggestions on head gasket upgrades.

I believe I fixed the head gasket issue. One of the head studs was threaded into a helicoil. I had a guy CNC machine a threaded insert and am now running a copper gasket.

Also, I noticed a guy on CL parting a z400, so I got the front spindles, hubs, and rotors on the way to change this bike over. Should be a big improvement since these factory parts are steel and the z400 ones are aluminum. Them I'll get better brakes since the rotors are slightly larger and I can run yfz dual pistol calipers

I got new z400 rotors and yfz 450 calipers in, so one step closer to making the swap on the front of this bike. Also, ordered some billet aluminum foot pegs off eBay

I'm gonna try to cut, modify, and weld on these things until they are a direct fit for the quadracer. First thing is to get rid of the red anodized coating on them though. I I like the look of raw aluminum

I could've slightly modded the z400 rock guards to clear the yfz450 calipers but I decided not to run them. I may powdercoat them in the future and install them later but I like the look without them right now. I can't install the spindles until I get new front rims with the z400 lug pattern though

Now gotta use oven cleaner to remove the red anodizing, then clean the aluminum real good before TIG'ing it all together.

Once I'm done, I'm gonna sandblast and powdercoat the factory pegs

Nice LT. Those pegs look like they'll be a nice improvement. Here's my '89, might have to look into upgrading my pegs soon.
