wow that is very nice. If you want to get rid of any of the stock parts I'm restoring a 86' and am still looking for some oem parts(bars, skidpan, front bumper, grab bar, plastics rims ...)that quad looks better then the one I have.

id honestly take all those stock parts off man. No way I could ride with them if they are actual original parts (which they look to be)

sweet ride that was one heckkkkkk of a deal... nice up grades as well i love turner pipes. i got a hi rev. in mint chrome they dont make em anymore but i am more of a top end guy i am light. i wish i could find a deal on a fat boy somewhere.. not sure if i like the riser for the bars though but to each his own.. keep the progress updated as you go. nice ride

Yeah, to be honest I may remove the risers after some test riding... I used 2" risers on my suzuki lt250r i used to have and I liked them for agressive riding... standing up and riding hard on technical terrain is easier i find with them... at least on my old suzuki... but they sit high on my R when i'm sitting on the seat just cruising, I'm thinking they might be a bit high when i'm ice racing too... the ones on my "R" are 3" risers too which is more than my LT had... I might sell these in the future if i'm not happy with the overall feel and control...

Some others might share my sentiment when I say, please don't tear it down and turn it into some wild colored custom creation. Stock looking R's are way more fun to look at and admire, especially if it was that way to begin with.

About the risers, the TRX became more popular than the LT for several reasons, one being the balanced feel of the bike. I'd be surprised if you needed to raise the bars much if the bars are stock-ish height like the Renthal TRX Fourtrax replacements are.

I can agree man! I think the most bad *** 250r would be one completely stock except pipe, and +4 axle and +3 arms with works shocks all the way around. Ive never seen one, and your almost there! It would be BAD *** IMO

My bars are not 250R replacements just so you know... they are YFZ450 bend bars... But like I was saying, I may remove the 3" risers... I may not... I like them for standing up riding aggresively on technical terrain but when i'm Ice racing or just cruising down a long smooth trail I might not like them... I have not had much seat time on it since i put them on...

But what are you going to do with all that original equipment that you can't buy anymore?

i got my 86 for 800 dollars, but i got really lucky! a friend of a friend had it a a guy shop because he was told it needed a top end and rear shock. i got it put good gas in it and pulled it wit another wheeler and it fired after sitting over a year outside. turned out it had rust on the flywheel and it was picking up when you were trying to kick it. i have changed the top end since then just for someone using the wrong style clip in the piston which when i pulled it off turned out to be a resleeve big bore. sorry for the long story.

I'm getting rid of some of the stock parts.... I bought it to do with it what it was made to do... (make it faster, and more competitive at the track and on the trail... I wouldn't buy a stock "R" to race it against modified 450 4-strokes and banshees and try to whoop ***... its like trying to race a stock 450 against one thats modified... I appreciate the stock form of an "R" but when honda built them they didn't know they were going to be as sought after and as good as they are... but they need some mods to be more competitive against other modified quads... I'm keeping the stock plastics to hang next to my bar down in the celler... they are mint originals that are hard to find but my "R" is getting a fram up restoration with a Duncan 340 motor, and it will be red, yellow, and black, custom +3" longer A-Arms to adapt to a 450R brake setup, long travel fox float shocks, bead lock rims.. etc... I don't want to bucher and shave the stock plastics just to keep the stock looking fenders... If i wanted an original "R" then I wouldn't modify it in any way... I would leave it completely stock but then I wouldn't be racing it like it was made for either... It would sit in my garage and putt around the yard once in a while... where is the fun in that if your not gonna ride it like you stole it? I wouldn't keep those nice stock plastics on it and race it either... all it takes is one flip and its all busted up and all that nice original S**T is broken now.... This is just my opinion but I bought it to make it my own and Make it competitive and turn heads... When people see a nicely built "R" out on the track these days they have alot o respect and drool for that too... many have gone 4-stroke because they have to buy the latest thing out on the market and hop it up... I have an oldschool racer that is appreciative in its own rights all hopped up like a cheetah on cocaine...

86DUNCAN250R- I want you to let me know when you are letting go of those stock parts.
KWATTS - where have you been? I got mine form Ct. it is nowhere as nice as his but the one I have is vin #250 and the only thing that is not original is the carrier and the top end has never been off.

honda5- I will let you know what and when i'm parting out when i get to it... Income tax time is just about here and I just ordered some new rims and tires... soon as I get them and bolt them up I'll be selling my stock gold rim's if you or anyone else is interested... they are in good shape as you can see from the pics... the finish is just starting to get a few blemishes but i'm sure they'll even look 10 times better if they were cleaned. i just washed them off with the hose and gave them a swipe with a wet clean rag... in a few of the pics the may look really dark and dirty, only because i reversed them so they would make the front end wider so I could take a few measurements for the +size A-Arms i'm having made for it... the darkness on the rim in those pics is just brake dust and dust debris that has accumulated on the insides of the rims that i didn't clean off... but the rims hold a bead fine and are not bent... there are a few little nics and scratches on the very outer edge on a few of them but they are in great overall shape!

86DUNCAN250R
01-11-2010, 02:01 PM
what does the vin #250 mean? was it the 250th off the production line? i'm curious... lol but i live in Upstate New York about 2-3 miles from canada... in a town called Massena... That is where I bought mine... and yes it ws sitting in a garage for 6-9 years with a bent axle before I bought it... lol

Honda5
01-11-2010, 08:08 PM
yes definantly let me know on the rims and other stuff when you are ready to sell. And yes it is the 250th one of production the vin # is ????????000250 thats the only reason I paid too much for it(hahaha!).

nice find. looks good
my 87 was purchased on 12-23-87
vin number is XXXXXX254. i bougth it from the original owner 14 years ago with the original bill of sale and the honda certificate of origin.

the guy i bought it from payed 2500 plus tax for a christmas present for his kid.

86DUNCAN250R
01-12-2010, 05:55 AM
I just looked and the vin# on my registration ends in 006175... I'm guessing then that mine was the 6,175th 250R off the production line? did they make that many in 86' their 1st year? our would it be the 175th? I should have my new rims/tires within a week or so honda5... I ordered them from a guy on here so as long as the bolt pattern is right then I will mount them and let you know when I have the original gold rims off and I take those old tires off... I'll be keeping the tires off the back rims but the fronts are originals and they are dry-rot and cracked from sitting so long so they will be tossed out... but I will sell the rims... If you want them let me know... I'm sure you've seen the pics of them. they are in fine shape.

Honda5
01-12-2010, 06:29 AM
looks like you have the 6,175th one off the line. I don't need the tires I have all 4 that are brand new.
