well im starting to order parts for my 440 bore. if anyone has been reading and/or helping me in my other thread; i recently bought a 99 400ex that had the 440 big bore kit, stage 2 hot cam and stage 3 dynojets. well long story short took motor apart to change head gasket and the motor is ACTUALLY a 416. i wanted to make sure that the cam that is in it is actaully a stage 2 hotcam.

so is there any way to identify what cam i have? thanks!

Just write the numbers down and go to hot cams website you will be able to find which cam you have.

It should have numbers by where the gear goes on.

well i went out and looked and i found some numbers on the ends in the bearings. TM9904 and TMB 18 they dont match any part numbers from hotcams...

That is the part number of the cam bearing, you need to look at the castings of the cam.

Does it have the de-compressor still?

Also a motor can be a 440 and only be bored to a 416 I believe, it has to be a stroker motor though.

thast kinda what i figured but ill go check the cam again, i didnt see any numbers on the cam anywhere. the cylinder is bored to 416, i was told it was a 440 big bore when i bought it.

On my hot cam the part number was facing kinda down when the engine was at TDC.

And I realize you were told it was a 440cc bigbore and it could still be a 440cc but it makes the displacement through a crank and a smaller bore than only a bore.

Most likely it is just a 416 but I'm just letting you know you may actually have a 440

looks stock to me bc the decompessor is on it and only the stock one should have it.

No brainer here, that's a stock cam for sure.

It's highly unlikely that any other aftermarket cam will have the stock decompression mechanism on it like that cam does. The decomp mechanism is the round looking mess of parts towards the right of the cam.

It could be an XR400 cam, which also uses the auto decompression mechanism on the cam, but it's most likely stock.

Here is a close up of the auto decompression mechanism:

This is what it looks like with the auto decompression mechanism removed (what aftermarket cams will look like):

well im not sure ill be boring it to 440..... all tho a hot cam is only 190 bucks.... ugh i dont know what to do. i was going to bore it out since i have the whole thing apart anyway, and the rings need replaced, plus im doing the GTT head studs, and it would only cost 75 more bucks for GTT to bore it out...... hmmmmmm

i did get the shaft on that deal tho....

its in my sig. here is the ad the guy had listed on craigslist. runs good. paid 1100 bucks. needs tie rods/ends, brake pads, battery, and little bit of TLC.

----------------------------------------
440 big bore kit
Stage 2 hot cams
Stage 3 dyno jet kit
Dura blue skid plate
Uni airfilter
D.I.D chain and sprocket
Wb rear brake caliber
Works performance front suspension
Maxxis razr front tires and fresh artrax mxtrax rear tires
Dura blue +2 rear axel
Lonestar +1 rear swingarm
White bros headers into a custom carbonfiber micron can
Dg front bumper
Dg nerf bars
Scott grips

The bad:

Smokes when started after not starting for awhile (after it warms up it's fine)
Tierods are bent ($20 on eBay)
Needs battery (its been sitting)
--------------------------------

but like i said, i blew head gasket after the third ride lol. tore it apart to fix it and found that it WAS NOT a 440 but infact it was only bored out to 416, and now i see that it doesnt have the stage2 hotcam. it IS jetted b/c there are two inch and a half holes cut in the air box lid, i put duct tape over them (i ride alot of trails with big water holes) and it only idles. if u give it gas i bog down and shut off and wouldnt start again, removed duct tape and its fine lol.

I know I'm digging up an old thread here ,but when I was doing my 416 I couldn't figure out what cam I have. The cam does not have the decompressor mechanism and the only thing i can see on it is an H circled and and M circled (honda Motor co.?) stamped between the lobes. I know you guys all say hot cams have numbers and everything stamped all over them. So is this just the stock cam with the decompressor removed or what?
