I have been looking at a 400ex with a 440cc motor, laeger +2 a arms, laeger 1 1/4 swingarm, pep zps shocks, axle, beadlocks, fcr carb, laeger stem, sparks full pipe, and all the other little things that go along with a race quad. I used to race a 400ex back in the day when the limit at the nationals was 416cc. I'm just wondering if this bike with a good rider would keep up with the 450r on the track. It's been years since I raced MX and would only ride some local tracks and no nationals. I can pick this quad up for 3000 dollars and know the history of it. Or I was thinking of getting a 450r and try that, but I always hear of the crank bearings going out of them. The 400ex I'm talking about has a hotrod crank in it. Just wanted to see what everyone thinks about this deal.

I wouldnt spend 3,000 to be honest with you. I just sold my 440 for $1,800 (well 2100 because he financed it from me). I would wait and find a cheap 450r for around 3-3500. They do have them. good luck on whatever you decide. Try to talk him down

i sold this last yr for 3600 pc by pappy

i however would try to get it for 2500 or less or youll lose money, its prob worth it if thats what you want, but 450s are going for the same or less just as modded

btw its all rider, but a 450 will put you at the front of the pack alot easier, there was spots with my 416 and the 440 that lacked power on the track, my yfzs were much better for mx, cant beat a 400ex for all around use and longevity

man is that one nice bikes, like srh said, if it's what you really want then go for it. But chances are you'll never get your money back for it. But again, nice bikeee

That is a very nice 400ex, I have had a few 400ex's and have had almost 0 problems. Even with my 416 race quad, that I put at least 20 fair races, 20 dist races, five national races all mx and all in one season with no motor problems. All I hear about the 450r's is crank problems and other motor problems. But I'm just going off of what I hear on here and other people talking. Thats why I have stayed away from the 450r.

I would say $2000 - $2500 would be a fair

i would buy a 400ex over a 450r anyday... i pitted on a XC team and the driver has a 440 in a creek upside down with water up the @ss in the intake and it fired right up and ran the rest of the race and got 2nd or 3rd i think... i dont care what you say the 400ex is the only truely reliable 4 stroke besides the 4x4s and some of them are junk...

i had a 450r and i HATED HATED it... i had a 250x i rode more then the 450r... then i sold it and got my prp 250r i have now...
