This is a Beginners Guide for the new GOPRO Hero (HD) Motorsports helmet cam. I just recieved my camera early yesterday, and I spent countless hours trying to figure out how to use, set up, and change the camera and parts without destroying anything. The directions are understandable, but pretty useless, and leave out a ton of details! So im gonna fill some of them in for you, and provide pictures for easy understanding.

Before I add anything, I found this 22 minute GOPRO HD quick training video that was extremely helpful for me, and should help you get started with your camera.

GOPRO HD Quick Start Training pt. 1 of 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaBByvLlIzw)
GOPRO HD Quick Start Training pt. 2 of 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLWppamXWs8&feature=related)
GOPRO HD Quick Start Training pt. 3 of 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQjSQlS1Kpw&feature=fvw)

1. The first video talks talks about the Comparison with the standard Hero camera and the new HD Hero.
2. The second video explains the HD Hero menu system
3. The Third video Introduces the High Definition features, tips and tricks.
___________

Next, Im going to explain more about the accessories, assembly, mounting, and other little tips. Im not going to get into the menu system. Refer to video 2 to learn the menu buttons and icons.

1. Heres an overlook of the camera and all the parts along with it. I had 5 total adhesive mounts, but I put two of them on my helmet prior to this photo. -
http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad273/RPDXC/GOPRO%20HD%20for%20Beginners%20writeup/IMG_0051.jpg

From Right to Left, Top to Bottom - You have your:
1. USB Cord - Use for charging your camera and to load videos onto your PC.
2. Red, Blue, Green tv plugs for a High Definition TV
3. Red, White, Yellow tv plugs for your basic Standard Definition TV
4. GOPRO Camera
5. Waterproof Camera Housing
6. Open Back Door (non waterproof, louder sound)
7. Sealed Back door (waterproof, Wind (noise) resistant past 100mph)
8. Suction Cup mount
9. Side mount Pivot Arm
10. Quick Release Buckle
11. Verticle-Surface Release Buckle
12. Buckle Lock
13. Adheisive mounts
______

Starting with the camera parts. Installing Memory Card - Make sure memory card is fully pushed in and locked like in the picture. You have to really push this card in fully for it to lock in place. Without the memory card in, this camera is rendered useless.
http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad273/RPDXC/GOPRO%20HD%20for%20Beginners%20writeup/IMG_0063.jpg

Looking onto the other side of the camera. You will see 3 ports. From top to bottom,
1- HDTV - This port is for watching your videos on your High Definition TV.
2- USB - Loading and watching your videos/images onto your computer
3- TV/sound - This port is for watching your videos on a Standard Definition tv. This is also how you add sound while watching onto a High Definition TV. *See following photos*
Note- (Had to rotate this photo. Don't let it throw you off)

Next. From Right to Left- USB Cord, HDTV cord, SDTV Cord.
http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad273/RPDXC/GOPRO%20HD%20for%20Beginners%20writeup/IMG_0052.jpg

Note- If you plan to hook up to an HDTV. Your 3 HD cords are all video cords. In order to enable sound, you also have to connect your two Red and White SDTV cords to your tv. Don't worry about the yellow one.
http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad273/RPDXC/GOPRO%20HD%20for%20Beginners%20writeup/IMG_0067.jpg

I pre installed the battery before taking these pictures. There is a small tab on the battery case for opening. Push tab in hard and case will pop right open. No need to pry against it.
http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad273/RPDXC/GOPRO%20HD%20for%20Beginners%20writeup/IMG_0064.jpg
______

Onto the the Camera housing. Only thing I wanted to add here was how to change the back doors on the case. In the picture below, you can see a little open tab that the door pops into. When you get your camera, and the waterproof door is already installed, its nearly impossible to see this open gap. To pull off door - Pull door open all the way in the opposite direction of closed, and pull away from camera housing. It fits on there very tight, so don't be afraid to add some force to it.
http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad273/RPDXC/GOPRO%20HD%20for%20Beginners%20writeup/IMG_0072.jpg
http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad273/RPDXC/GOPRO%20HD%20for%20Beginners%20writeup/IMG_0073.jpg

_______
Camera mounting info and tips - When you get your new camera, the Quick Release buckle will already be attached to the camera. When you have your camera clipped into your adheisive mount, make sure to put in the little orange rubber peice between the clip. this ensures your camera will stay on and will not unbuckle itself.
http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad273/RPDXC/GOPRO%20HD%20for%20Beginners%20writeup/IMG_0069.jpg
With Camera housing screwed in - http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad273/RPDXC/GOPRO%20HD%20for%20Beginners%20writeup/IMG_0075.jpg

Note- if any of the pivot thumb screws are not getting tight enough by hand, use phillips screw driver to give them an extra turn. http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad273/RPDXC/GOPRO%20HD%20for%20Beginners%20writeup/IMG_0057.jpg
__________
In the next picture, you see three adheisive mounts, and the suction cup mount. The suction cup is very strong and difficult to take off once applied. If you can not remove the suction cup after installing, take a flat head screwdriver and lightly pry underneath the cup. Be careful not to do any damage to the rubber.
http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/ad273/RPDXC/GOPRO%20HD%20for%20Beginners%20writeup/IMG_0055.jpg
_______

Mounting Tips - One thing you do not want is your adheisive mount flying off with your camera because you didn't put the pad on correctly. The directions mention nothing about applying these pads. So to be safe, Make sure you wipe your helmet clean, and use a rubbing alcohol or other chemical to rid the grease and dirt from your mounting area. (I stuck my helmet in front of a heater and let the plastic get very warm before I applied the adheisive mounts. (If you plan on never removing these pads, a couple drops of superglue on the pad probably isn't a bad idea.)

That is it for now. I hope this has helped some of you out. And saved you lots of time, most importantly. Any other input, tips or tricks, please add.
No riding videos up yet, not in any physical health to be riding today :ermm: .

The one thing I keep wondering about on the helmet mount is I would like to know for sure that the camara is still there after a ride. Maybe a safety tether or mount it in the front somewhere where you can keep in in the periferal vision. Absolutly awsome camara.

What I was going to do is just attach a peice of fishing line with 1 loop on one side and a fishing line clip on the other. You could throw the loop around the helmet visor bolt, and for the camera, drag the little clip through an opening and just hook it back over the line. It sounds a little redneck, but you would know if that camera ever came off, and you wouldn't loose it.

No prob ;) . I was looking for good info and pics on these cameras for awhile now, but couldn't find anything besides those 3 videos, which I would of never figured out the menu without it. The menu system is just plain retarted! But once you get it down, its very simple!

If there's one thing they should upgrade for next year..... I'd say it should be a brand new set of instructions!

just curious on prices?

But is this a good deal for a hero wide? This guy can't seem to sell them at this price. He has new auctions up as soon as the others end.

I got my camera today. Thanks for the write-up. I plan on shooting some videos on Christmas around the house.

Haha. Be sure to post up your videos here so we can see them! I been wanting to test it out on the quad, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Kxrida, It said the Ad was removed, so no info came up for it. If its not the HD camera, than they probably aren't gonna sell many of them, unless they are going for really cheap.

also when installing a mount on top of your helmet... be SURE it is straight. mine is very close but just slightly off... and its annoying to look at on your videos after you notice it, lol.

Nice write up Ryan, I've had mine since last year & like it alot. I have the GP wide & it has an awesome picture, have'nt seen any pictures from an HD yet but if there like the standard, you guys that are getting the HD should be really happy with it. Thinking about making some mounts to go underneath the bike to see how suspension & stuff work. There's alot of things you can do with this camera other than just mounting it on a helmet.
HAPPY VIDEOING !!!!!!!!! :D

Ive been using mine for 5 months now. One more tip for the road, as far as the camera falling off thing goes......Go to autozone and buy a $5-6 hood pin set for hot rods. They come with small stainless steele braided wires (really small) that have nice crimped eyelets on each end. If you attach it to the side of the helmet (BTW which is where I have found I like the most) you can put one end into one of the mount screws and the other end into your visor screws. This will keep it from falling completely off and getting lost.

Also, you can check out my youtube vids, I have quite a few of them using the GoPro Hero so far. My user name is s9l78j , search for it and watch em!

Also, one other tip....when you link it to your computer, and the thumbnail looks like a vid youve already took, preview it then rename it before saving it to your computer...saves time and headaches. Also clear your recycle bin after deleting them from the camera.

Ryan

Thanks bigd!

And thats a good idea with the hood pin set. Definitly gonna have to do that.

I finally got to test my camera out today. Im not a fan of riding in the snow (to much spinning). One thing I wanted to do was edit the beginning out of it, but I've been having difficulties editing mpeg4's. I been testing out AVS video editor, but every save option I try, really degrades the video, or makes it freeze in parts of it. And there is not many mpeg4 editors and output software either! Im gonna end up purchasing one of them, just not sure which one.

Cant do it in windows movie maker?

Ryan
12-24-2009, 09:39 PM
In Windows movie maker, no. In Windows live movie maker I can, but the only option for output is wmv. And its the stupidest editor I've ever seen. The old one is 10 times better.

I haven't been able to find any free software that can edit mp4's.

You cant save your file directly to your computer in "my videos", then import it into windows movie maker?

This dude is SWEET! Now if I can just figure out how to edit them and upload them on the tube. I recorded a little bit today in 960p 30f/sec, and it was crystal clear on the big screen.

I'll look into what kinda program I think I can use to to edit them, but for now, just usin the cables. Only dislike with the camera is it is very hard to judge angles, like how steep a hill is or how much air you're getting.

Ryan
12-26-2009, 10:52 AM
Yeah, it is hard to judge the angles when watching the video. The 960 I think is a 4:3 aspect ratio, not the widescreen option. It seemed to make the objects apear a little further away than the other options, but its hard to tell. Try using 720p or the 1080p option and see if it helps a little.

As far as video editing goes..... I been trying to figure this one out for the past 2 days. I came up with a solution, but also a few problems. I found that there really isn't any good free software that supports mpeg4's or outputs mpeg4's. Software like AVS video editor, Sony vegas pro, Adobe Premiere, are ones that support mpeg4's, and can output as an mpeg4. You could always get a free video converter, change the format to wmv, and edit in windows movie maker, but you will loose a ton of quality.

I downloaded the free trial of AVS video editor, and spent alot of time yesterday taking a 20 second clip, and testing the output options, then reviewing to check the quality. The only video setting I tested was at 960p, but I either lost a significant amout of quality, or I got decent quality, but had the video freeze for a second at certain parts of the clips, which is no good! Maybe its the program, maybe its my computer having a problem with the output working correctly, im not sure.

Im really stumped on this one and can't seem to find any help anywhere on the net. Im willing to buy a software for this, but the freezing is a big problem.

I dont have the HD, so im not exactly following what you are saying. Are you saying that when its extracted from your card or GoPro that is already comes out as an mpeg4? If it still comes out as an avi or other video, you can post it on youtube then download it back from there as an mpeg4 if that helps any.

Dont know how the HD does, but I havent experienced any quality loss editing it through windows movie maker.

What Im saying is.....wish I could help!

Ryan
12-28-2009, 08:23 AM
Yeah, when I take the file directly off the memory card, it is an mpeg4. Im just having trouble with the output on AVS video editor. Can't seem to find a good setting that really doesn't mess up the video.

CRE Performance

I dont have a lot of experience with mpeg4's, and it may not be any of the same, but....my wife just got a new, really expensive cannon camera for christmas and it exports the videos as mpeg4's right off the card as well. I couldnt find any program that the movie would really play in and not be gimped up other than the program that came with the camera. What i did was import it into the windows movie maker (even though it wouldnt play right) and added and cut whatever, then loaded it to youtube and Ill be dang if it doesnt work correctly on there. Go figure.

try downloading a test copy of Corel VideoStudio 12.

Ryan
12-29-2009, 10:47 AM
Which windows movie maker are you using, the old style with the timeline, or the new one from vista or windows 7?
(I can't stand to use the new windows movie maker, it is 5 steps below the older version.) Im on a laptop right now, which has windows 7, and I've been able to play mpegs in Windows media player. But im sure Divx player supports that file, too.

But the only problem with using windows movie maker, is when you save your project, your converting a mpeg4 to a wmv, which looses quality. On a still video, im not to worried about a little quality decrease, but with a shakey helmet cam video, you notice every little inch where the video was affected. Another problem with the editor im using, the preview for it looks like its playing the video in 1fps , so its hard to see what im really editing.

Im really suprised I haven't heard or found anything about these quality/output issue from anyone else on the net. I haven't been messing with it lately, But if I come up with something, or a good output option that keeps the video as original as possible, i'll be sure to post it up. It would be nice if the GOPRO came with a software cd to do some minor editing like the canon.

I only edit HD video. I have both Corel and Adobe Premier Elements. I like Corel because it will burn AVCHD format on a regular DVD disk that will then play in HD quality in almost all BluRay players.

On the gorpro web site FAQ page it says it saves the video to avi.
When I download the files from onto my computer it says they are mpeg4 . Am I missing something here?
Ive played them off my camara directly onto a dvd recorder and the video quality of the Herohd looks the same on the prejector tv . Outstanding quality . When I figure out how to edit the files I post some up. I have some footage of my wife driving her snowmobile .

The regular GoPro Hero stores in AVI format that is easiest to edit with Windows Movie Maker. From my experience, Adobe Premier Elements and Corel VideoStudio both mess up syncing the audio properly.

I edit HD from a Sony HDR-SR12 with Corel VideoStudio because you can burn to a regular DVD in AVCHD format and play on most BluRay players in HD format. I haven't invested in a BluRay burner yet and the discs are still expensive.

Some editing info- .... For those of you who just want to take a few small clips out of their video, the best free solution would be to download "AVS video REmaker." Download the free trial. As long as what you are editing isn't over 5 minutes long, you won't be asked to pay.

edit- I thought I had the Editor figured out, but I was wrong. AVS editor simply can't support outputting these kind of files without choppyness or quality loss.

when I first started editing video I purchased Sony Vegas. It is a great starter program and does everything you need to do even with HD. It really helps to have a fast computer. On my old PC it took 12 hours to render my first movie (about an hour long in standard video). With my new dedicated editing station I can render 20 minutes of hd in about 15 minutes. Now that I have moved on to more professional editing software I still long for the days of the ease of Sony Vegas. Its well worth the $130.00 bucks. I dont like adding videos to posts mostly when they are off topic but these are the trailers of my first 2 real movies. They were edited with Sony Vegas

That is a sick video! Nice job!

I just had to delete AVS and trying to get a refund from them. The program is garbage and customer service is terrible. I tried sony vegas, it worked well, but the preview is very choppy again and the program seems to run a little slow. I been playing around with cyberlink powerdirector 8 and it seems to work 100 times better than AVS. Gonna have to purchase that as soon as I get my money back.

Update - Im awaiting my refund for the AVS programs. I ended up getting Cyberlink Powerdirector 8 (FOR FREE!) . It is by far my favorite editor I have tried yet, and everything works perfect. If you want a good editor to support your gopro hd videos, follow this link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGjjrsfQfDA .

Open up the info to read more, and put either the ultra or deluxe serial codes in to activate it. I downloaded the trial, and this worked for me the first try. I did not have to download any keygen or crack. This was the code I used to activate the Deluxe version - 75J8W-VNT2R-QRZ6P-2SKAS-CX2TX-EXB4T . This will save you alot of money and frustrating finding a good program that works well with these files... Enjoy!

John, the Timbo video was great. a question about the river video for you and a general question for everybody. Where was your camera mounted for the river video and how does everybody get their initial angle set? Do they take a short video and then go watch to see if it is aimed correctly?

witech

Since the recorder doesnt have a screen for playback you pretty much have to eyeball it. If you noticed in my vids the horizon was tilted just a tad . It would have been better but my camara mount wouldnt straighten up any more s it was hitting my helmet. . Since it has such a wide angle lens its very forgiving. I mounted my camara to the side/front so I can see it in my periferal vision just in case it decides to fall off.
You like the Timbo vid eh? LOL we were just screwing around by some cliff/caves in New York last year.

Cool vids! The only Thing I don't like about the 960p setup is that everything looks speed up. And noss- Use the link I provided in the previous post if you want a better editing program for free! It will support and output mpeg4's so you do not have to convert. Make sure your output is set for the H.2.6.4 codec for best results.

I found some time and put together this video in Cyberlink Powerdirector. This is a video of me riding from my gas station, down the trails to the motorcycle shop. I edited out some parts - note- Please tell me if you have problems with this video not loading all the way, or loading fast enough. All the sudden i've been having trouble loading youtube video's in HD and wanted to know if it was just me? <object width="853" height="505"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/LdQKyJ7IiUI&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b&hd=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/LdQKyJ7IiUI&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b&hd=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="853" height="505"></embed></object>

Another soloution is to purchase neoscene from cineform. This codec will let you edit the gopro footage in any of the popular editors like premiere pro, vegas and final cut pro. The files created by nescene take far less processing power to edit than the mp4s that come directly out of the camera. Neoscene runs about 130$.

All the sudden i've been having trouble loading youtube video's in HD and wanted to know if it was just me? <object width="853" height="505"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/LdQKyJ7IiUI&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b&hd=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/LdQKyJ7IiUI&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x5d1719&color2=0xcd311b&hd=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="853" height="505"></embed></object>

It is only free because people would be stealing the unlocking codes. Funny this site is so strict and ethical about stealing pictures but doesn't seem too concerned about software.

thats so cool. he really goes to beat hell. next time try tilting the camera back about 10 degrees. that way the screen wont be filled with the ground. Otherwise people have a tendancy to get motion sickness with all the stuff flying by.

what I did is a lot of trial and error. when I got the camera perfect on my helmet for the best video I drilled through the helmet mount and camera mount while still together just big enough to put some .035 wire through. That way it is always in the right place so I dont have to mess with it and I put a piece of wire through the mounts just in case the nut backs out or something so I dont loose the camera

In film school they teach you to break the screen into thirds. The horizon is normally a third up from the bottom. When filming people talking they are usually a third over from the side of the screen.

Yeah he was hauling for sure! What kind of mini was that anyway?

Setting up the right angle on these camera's just takes a few tests. Once you find the spot you like, usually you can set it up by eye everytime.

Here is another one. Didn't download the HD version. He hasn't been on a MX track in 6 months and it showed. This is what they called the Vet track. Didn't get on the national track this time. Maybe next time. He had fun.

Has anyone had the plastic pieces of the swivel break. I notice one of the 3 hinge blades has snapped on mine. Can you buy replacement pieces or do you need to buy the whole arm assembly?
