i have a 01 400ex with a 440big bore kit and stage 3cams and mid port and polish, with a k&n air filter not in the box, the rest of the parts are stock, just recently i went to glamis and my quad at almost full throttle in 3gear started making a clicking noise and it was coming from the engine..can anyone tell me what can this be? it does fine idling and it does fine cruising thro gears...can it be my valves need to re adjusted?

this happened to one of my little pit bikes in 2nd gear. it turned out the gear was going bad. im not sure if this is the same thing because you can only hear yours when your hard on the gas but i thought i would try and help.

does this happen in any gear at WOT or only in 3rd

Thanks for the help siggy.....

Yes it does happen in WOT and higher gears from 3/4 ways of throttle to full throttle....and it usually happens when the quad has been is warmed up from riding... Do you think you might know what it is hypersnyper?

Anyone have any ideas?

Do you know if it has a HD or 450 timing chain?

Has it always done this or just started?

It could be valves, timing chain, or even jetting.

You should check your valves and make sure there in spec. Its to easy not to. That way you can at least rule out valves if nothing changes.

might be a dumb suggestion, but what compression ratio is it? what octane are you running? could it be spark knock/ predetination? if your not already running race fuel, dump some in and see if it does it. head gasket leaking? timing chain or tensioner like hyper said, could be anything.

could be a crank bearing too. never over look any noise that develops like that. try changing your oil. if its broke down it wont perform the same. viscosity is very important in hi revving motors. and at WOT it could be too thin and not properly lubricating things. hence the knocking noise.

hyper:it does not have a HD or 450 timing chain, its stock...ill check the valves this week, dont they have to be re-adjusted after acouple of rides abit after the 440big bore kit is installed?

extreme:im not completely sure the ratio it is, but ill let you know today, i always run 91octane...and i know i have a high compresion piston installed too, should i run half 91 and half Vp racing fuel?

Bigbad400:damn hope its not a crank bearing. thats lots dinero to spend. ill also change the oil this week and the oil filter.

thank you for the information, write back i apreciate it...ill get more info and let you know

everyone has there own terms as to what high compression is, if its 11:1 you might get away with premium, but i suggest a mix, if its 12 or 12.5:1 def need 110 in there, it doesnt hurt anything to have too high of octane, performance might suffer some, but it will run cooler and the lead is good for valves. dump some in and try it. was the sound kinda pingy? a tick? or a knock? and sweet quad btw:macho

Sounds like detonation. Heat plays a big roll in determining if/when an engine will ping on a given octane rating, and sand will heat a motor up fast. Most engines will ping under a heavy load like you're describing. Mix 91 octane 50/50 with some race fuel or 100LL AVGAS (available at your local municipal airport) and see if the problem persists. Since you say it doesn't normally do it, you're probably right at the borderline with straight 91 octane, and the extra heat generated by dune riding is putting you over the threshold. I have the same problem at the dunes, so I run 50/50 with 100LL and it runs great.

BTW -- DO NOT continue to ride it while it's pinging. Detonation can and will cause serious engine damage in a short amount of time. Try the race fuel, and maybe even up the main jet a size or two for the dunes to keep things cool.

sweet looking quad too,

Def try the race fuel, i didnt even think of detonation but it could def be that.

extreme: its a tick noise..like repeating tick...like 3/4throttle to full itll...tick,tick,tick...

i hope its just a fuel mixture problem, ill do the oil change, check valves, and try the 50/50 fuel wise....if i run complete vp racing fuel maybe 100octane will that be okay?

also upgrading the timing chain be a good investment?

also i know this isnt part of my thread, but my question is, what else can i do to get more power outta the 440bigbore kit without spend lots of money?

i have an 01 honda 400ex, big bore 440 kit, stage 3 cams, white brothers full system exhaust,mid-port and polish, k&n filter without the air box installed and upgraded clutch, everything else is stock on the engine..hope i can get some answers.... thank you for your help

Straight race fuel will be fine. If it solves the problem, you can try a 50/50 mix. If it does okay with that, you can stick with 50/50 at the dunes and save some money on race fuel.

The next big upgrade for you would probably be a carb upgrade. A 450R carb would be cheap, relatively easy, and give you a pretty good gain.

just watch ebay for them, or a new one through servicehonda is supposed to be pretty cheap. and theres some sticky threads that give you all the info you need to install them.

Look on ebay -- search "450R carb" or "450R carburetor". You can usually find one for under $100. You'll also need the 450R cable, but a lot of times the used carb will come with it. Just read through the 450R Carb thread and you'll get an idea of what is required for the install. A new one is about $180 and you'll still need the cable.
