Handle bar end cap removal

I have searched the site but can not find info on how to remove the end caps on my handle bars. I have an 08 400ex. I bent the left handle bar and I am replacing with a new stock one. I have the old bars off but cant remove the end caps holding the hand grips in place. There is a screw in the middle of the cap but it just turns, and dosent loosen. Thanks in advance for your help. it has been quite a while for me but, i think once i got the screw loose i just pulled hard on them to get them off. The screw has to be loose though since it is just like the stems on bikes that have the little expander thing inside if i recall. good luck, let me know how it works out for you. steve
