How high of gearing is practical on a nearly stock 400ex? What is everyone else running. Looking for more top end without dogging on the clutch too much. Maybe 15/36 instead of 15/38 w/ 20" tires?

I would do the 15/36 before i would go up one on the front, with a stock bike it should work fine for a little more top end...

going to a 36 from a 38 isnt going to give you more top end. Its going to help on acceleration but you'll lose probably a couple of miles an hour topped out.

i was runnin 15/37 on mine last year, but now that i have more power, im runnin 16/36. but that is with 18" tires. i was ruinnin the 15/37 with 20" tires and just a slip-on at first. i liked it.

What i plan on doing is getting a 440 kit, 16/36 gearing and 18'' holeshot tires. I think that should be a good set up for when i do MX, but when i hit the trails im goin to a 20'' holeshot and 14/36 gearing.

The only change I made for harescrambles is a 14 front. Now that I put one of my airboxes on I need to go back to 15. I dont think a 16 front will fit on a 400. There isnt the room to the cases

just my .02 the 16 tooth will fit on the front. it is tight, but i took a grinder to my case saver just to be sure it will clear at all times.

swapped back from 14/38 to 15/38 with 20" rears. Wow! I thought originally that those were too high, but stock gearing is actually much better. My stock 400 got beat by a modded 300ex when i ran the 14/38. With the 15/38 I smoked the same 300ex very badly from 2nd gear on up! I'll reserve the 14t for use with 22" rear tires only. Now i need to try a 37 or 36t rear.:)

Where can I get a 36 tooth sprocket? I can't find anyone that lists them for sale.

does the rear sprocket increase or decrease acceleration as the number of teeth go down?

33T sprocket and similar sizes are needed where you set up requires 18" tires+ lots of top speed such as mx with long fast runs.

Decrease, unless other changes are made such as rear tire size.
