I have a '05 450r that is completley stock til now. I bought a full HMF Sport Series exhaust, a K&N air filter, and I'm not gonna run an airbox lid. The paperwork that come with my exhaust and air filter recommends a 125 main jet. From what I've been reading, I thought that was kinda small. When I ordered my exhaust, I expected I'd be running right around a 160. They sent me a 125, 155, 180 and a 190 jet. They all have a little star next to the number also. I don't know what that means but I just thought I would throw that out there. So my question is, do I run the 125 like they recommend or do you guys think something bigger?

I wouldn't use anything less than a 170 main. You will be running lean if you do. I would also go up 1 or 2 sizes on the pilot jet, lower the clip 1 notch on the needle, and go two turns out on the fuel screw. This will get you in the ballpark.

Is 180 too big?

180 would probably be about right. I ran a 190 main, with no lid, but I had high comp piston and cam, too.

i run a 185 main,50 pilot,3rd notch on clip on hrc needle,2 turns out with an open lid, full rossier exhaust.it runs sharp! if you dont have one...get the hrc or equivalent needle, what a difference! the 180 main may be even better than the 185 but its close enough. wait till you feel the difference...your gonna laugh:D

Ok. I put the hmf full sport series exhaust on, put the 180 main in, I left the pilot jet alone, moved the c-clip on the needle down one notch so it's on the 4th notch from the top, and the pilot screw is 1 1/8 turn out. I haven't put the K&N filter on yet. It's currently drying at the moment. Now sitting in the garage it's idling good but when I blip the throttle very fast, it wants to quit. If I blip the throttle normal, it revs up no problem. Am I running too lean or too rich? Do I need to adjust the air idle screw? Will I need to do anything else once I do put the K&N on? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

that needle will cover that flat spot. its thinner and will transition better from idle circuit through the main circuit. turn the mixture to 2 turns out and play with it a bit. i can explain it better on phone how to adjust it.pm me if you wanna call.

Alright. Everything is done. But I have a few Questions. Do the 450r's have a rev limiter? This sounds like it does, maybe it's just cause it's more noticable with louder exhaust??? Another question is, is it normal for the header to glow for the 1st 4"- 6" idling. The glow seemed to go away if you reved it a few times. Also 86250rrider thanx for the phone call. The flat spot we had while not under load disappeared when we were running it under load, so you were correct on that also. We also think it sounds better with the quiet core & spark arrestor installed.
