shifting an 08 without using the clutch?

Hi I recently picked up a new 08 250EX and I was wondering if it is alright to shift without using the clutch? My understanding was I can choose to ride the bike like it has a clutch or like one of the older 01-05 without one.

Am I off base and going to damage the bike doing this?
