Locked up engine

I locked up the engine on my 400 I think, what do I need to have done to fix it?

First you have to explain exactly what happened for you to lock it up

it had been burning a lot of oil recently and i had forgotten to add some before a ride and engine shut off and oil resevoir was empty and wont start so im guessing thats it

how much do you think it would cost for a whole engine or a full rebuild?

there's usually complete engines on ebay for around a grand.. i picked up my 440 engine for 800 bux locally
if you're top end isnt screwed you might be able to pick up a used bottom end. maybe even find a newer bottom end with reverse

doesnt crank or anything

the engine tries to turnover but makes a huffing sound and doesnt start.

your looking at a new piston rings crank and rods

Well if the engine turns then its not "locked" so thats a plus. The only real way to know is to take it apart and see what carnage you have done. But if you have effed the crank and piston i would do as stated above and just buy a used engine that is complete and working. The engine swap is not that hard as long as you can get your swing arm bolt out.

There is a 440ex motor on ebay with a reserve of $500.00.. That might be a wise investment.. Guy selling has 100% positive feedback...
