you will have to drill a 3/8" hole and then have to have a 7/16" roll form tap to put their studs in

so pretty much all you need is a drill and ten dollars worth of equipment

i wouldnt do it yourself.take it to a machine shop. roll form taps are expensive and if you screw up your f***ed

My 416 has had an 11:1 with stock studs in it since the original owner bored it out right after he purchased it new in 2002. No problems at all.

It's a roll of the dice. I would rather spend the $100 and have no doubts, but if it worked for you, great!

Ok what if i had someone with lots of experience do it bc my friends dad is also helping me with the build. And how much are those taps anyway. And if when i get the cylider bored could they do it there.

you can buy the tap from GT Thunder also. It is $40. They also recomend honing the cylinder after the studs are installed.

My advice would be to buy the parts from the cheapest place you can find (eBay, whatever), and then send the cylinder and new piston to GTT. Tell them you want the HD studs installed and the cylinder bored and honed for the new piston. When you get it back, it will be ready to bolt together. GTT charges roughly the same as any other reputable shop for machine work, so it's not really going to cost any more for them to do it and you'll know that it's all done correctly. You may be able to find a local place to do it, but for the few dollars you might save, you could end up with a ruined cylinder.

The only way I would do it myself,is take it to work and do it in a Bridgeport. The last thing you need is to end up with a crooked head stud from doing it with a hand drill or drill press.

The shop you take it to should be able to install the studs if you take them in with you.

i agree with everyone on here your better off spending the money now and having it done right than goin cheap and having to do it twice if something gets messed up 200 isnt bad at all ive had a sleeve put in a for 150 just in labor another 100 for the sleeve and another 100 for the piston kit (92 suzuki ltr250r)
200 doesnt sound so bad after all

Did my sons 416 studs myself easy if you know what your doing. If you don't let a machinist do it. The Roll Form tap is a must cost me $25.00 but now I can do any time. Good luck with the rebuild they great.

I seem to remember the studs having different length requirements from the head to the top of the stud it was a little confusing to me it would suck to have to buy a new head over a small mistake

The sheet that GT thunder sends with the studs has all the info on it
