Big Bear u-joint

I have a 2000 Big Bear 400 4wd that the u-joint directly behind the engine has locked up on. Can I remove the rear differential and axle housing as one unit? The manual wants the rear drums, axle & drive shaft all removed as seperate items. I am not replacing anything other than the bad u-joint and the oil seal behind the joint. Any input on this would be appreciated.
