in the new dirtwheels jan. issue, i cant rem the page my mag is at work, but there is a "350r" in the letters section, hydroplaning across a pretty big water hole looks like a lake to me. is this possible? whats the trick a ton of air in the tires and a lot of speed, paddle tires? full skidplates? i always thought as soon as a four wheeler would hit water like that it would loose traction rev to the moon and sink or a r would most likely blow up.. right?? i dont know thats why i am asking, i have personaly done this on a sled and a "snowhawk" single track and ski snowmobile. but i have never seen a atv do it.
looks like fun!!!

same concept, big balls, lots of speed and keep the front end up

yeah but the surface area touching the water on the back of a r is what about 5 inches by 10 MABE. with about 3/4" tread, a sled is about 40 inches by 14 and 1 1/8 paddles!! so wouldnt a atv just spin out!!
has anyone done this any pics vids??

I did this for the first time about 5 months ago. 4th gear pinned and i leaned back went across a 30 foot pond like it was nothing. Very scary the first time after the 4th time i stop i was nerves i was getting to comfortable and would mess up.

better have a big set of cojones... and a lot of momentum! I've seen the aftermath of a water crossing gone bad...

you need to watch NitroCircus they do that stunt all of the time.

That looks really cool and I would love to see that in person. I might even try it, just not on my machine. :D

it's very cool to watch those guys skim like that. atv fan 28 and myself witnessed this not too long ago. its violent on the front end as you can see. i have yet to see a 2 stroker try it in that fashion tho. however, being an advid creek rider, i've evolved my quad over the years with special built skids for water conditions and played with different tires and just this past year managed to get mine to not only hydroplane but i got it planed out to the point that i was actually riding the surface and was stearing it for a spell. as mentioned, the rear wants the try and pass the front at lower speeds but isnt quite as bad at faster speeds but the tendousy to do so is still present.

You can do it, I used to do it on my ATC when I was younger, not water that deep though. You have to carry the front end and hit it fast, you lose speed and it stops fast when it starts to sink. I was going across about 40 or 50 yds of water about 2-5 feet deep across it, but I was in 6th gear, 5th gear is how I know about the sinking and stopping fast, you can tell really fast when you stop hydroplaning and start pushing water, I was close to shore luckily and didn't sink enough to cause a disaster. Amazingly enough you don't get very wet if you stay on top.

well all those vids were awsome!!! but everyone that i could see close, they all were using paddle tires like i expected. can you do it without, i mean as good and as far as some of these other guys. and like the others metioned i didnt see any 2-strokers but i am sure they will do it. if a four stroke can do so can the pingers :D

correct and its largely because of the way the box lids are designed for these new quads. i dont think it would be all that critical on a 250r that still uses the closed airbox and snorkle. atleast i've never had any issues.
