what year bike is this? I have an 06 that the tranny is still good in. Im about to buy a new 07 leftover so i was wondering if they tranmissions were any different then mine or the new 08/09's

ATVMX33

3rd gear only goes on the 08-09 models...so u should be good

Stiles86

06-07 you need to upgrade the shaft because of a false nutral... i bought the extended 3 year bottom end warrenty but when i went to use it they investigated me and said they had video of me racing at walden mx in NY lol 900 bucks for nothing, i miss my honda...if i had the money i would go back, but i really love the feel of the ltr i just cant afford two trannys a season...

07's go out too just not anywhere near as often. Had to replace mine last spring. I don't race, but ride it like I am racing it!

i almost bought a ltr because they come with the wide stance and fuel injection but horror stories like this make me feel good about buying something else.i really do like the looks of the ltr though:ermm:

I would buy the 06-07 in a heart beat again. Plus go talk to ATP racing. They are looking into making a billet third gear set if there is enough interest. Put the billet set in and the issue is eliminated.

the billet gearset for a banshee is $2500.i imagine the price would be comparable for the ltr.But one shouldnt have to fork out that kind of money after buying a 8k machine.I went through that process with my cannondale:mad: we shouldnt have to spend beaucoup cash trying to re engineer a machine thats "ready to race" from the factory.i just refuse to do it.there are too many other machines out there with less severe issues than trannys

No The billet gear set for the 08-09 from ATP is for third gear only. The 06-07's will be the same. That is the only problem gear. These gears from ATP are $550.

Honestly though nothing about the quad is ready to race other than the wide stance. You still have to put up extra coin for nerfs, CRBM/pc3, intake, exhaust, just to start.

i spent 800 for 3rd gear and polishing plus labor, and youre right this bike isnt race ready how ever it will cost you less to turn this bike into a race bike than any other brand except ktm....if the ltr did not have the tranny problem i would never switch to another brand the geometry on this bike is outstanding

I agree. The only other bike I would consider buying other than another LTR would be the KTM. Thats it. But personally the 3rd gear swap isn't hard and if your racing it, it is cheap insurance considering all of the other costs incurred for racing and beating the **** out of your bike(racing).

It doesn't matter what you buy, you never only pay what you had to, to get it out the door.

i agree one way or another you have to pay to play as maintaining performance machines of any brand aint cheap.$550 for a gear swap, thats a set of rear hipers with tires...lol i guess thats a small price to pay for insurance though, nothing like driving 3hrs to a race to dnf..no fun:ermm:

The engagement dogs on our billet gears are designed with the profile of the stock gears after we have them cut. They do not need cut. Also, we have never had a set returned or been contacted by anyone that has broken a set of the current design which has been in use for over a year. We did have the test set break a tooth after 40hrs in 08 which was the reason for the redesign in December of 08.

could there be another process of heat treating even the stock gears?i mean why are the gears breaking its not like the ltr are putting out too much hp even heavily modified.I find it hard to believe the factory would continue passing these flaws along knowing theres a problem. So could one buy a replacement stock 3rd gear and have it heat treated to another rockwell hardness or something?just curious dont know much about them myself

I'm looking at buying a 06 ltr. hope I don't run into these tranny problems. I can add something about heat treating though. There are many different meathods of heat treating, giving all sorts of results. However just makinng something harder doesn't nessesarily make it stronger. The strength of gears has as much to do with the choice of material and meathod of manufacture as it does with the heat treatment and case hardness. Gears are tricky because they need to be BOTH hard and tough.

We have tried every possible method of gear conditioning to help with these issues. Our best results have been the polishing process to the 06/07 and the billet gear set for the 08/09.

We are looking into making billet gear sets for the 06/07 transmissions now.

it still sucks that one would have to deal with these issues in the first place,if i can pick one up cheap enough ill try running a 12t cs sprocket to soften the shock loads on the output shaft and gears.I have never owned a bike with trany issues even my cannondale had a bullet proof tranny;)

got my tranny back from atp looks sick quality looks great, the people from atp were awsome hopfully it last longer than the stock tranny.

ktm isnt a shining star either guys remember back in the z400 days with the frame issues.......ktm needs extensive frame gusseting or major cracks accur during heavy mx racing, as soon as the good shocks go on cracks appear:mad:

i guess really regardless of brand usage plays the bigger part.Drag racers complain of exploding clutch baskets while a trail rider may never have a problem..go figure:rolleyes:
