you will get a number of opinions on this one, we use hiflo oil filters and either Klotz, Maxima, or Tilube for oils but like I said you will get a lot of suggestion, another good oil is amsoil.

hiflo filter with Rotella T 15w40 $11.00 per gallon and it dose not harm clutches...alotta engine builders use it and also pro riders do some research on it and youll prb start using it if ur anything like i am i was using $5 per quart yamalube and my buddy tried telling me rotella was better and i wasnt bout to use rotella because of it being a auto oil but i was easily convienced when i talked to 90% of my buddies and few pro and pro-am racers used it b4 they got sponsored and got free oil from supporting company which i would switch also if it were free to me lol

i've always use bel-ray thumper oil in all my 4-stroke quads and the reusable filter, i think its pro flo. the thumper oil was 11 bucks a quart last time i bought any. just one of my pet peeves to run good oil i guess...

oil is oil unless ur buying walmart super tech brand or havoline etc. anything that can be used in a wet clutch will work in a motocycle/atv. some ppl swear by amsoil but the last time i had my engine tore down i couldnt believe how clean the tranny and everything was..i still have stock oem crank in my bike and its a 06 raced every weekend in the A class i ride hard and it stands up to my abuse. ive always ran yamalube until i switched to rotella T if you change it properly then i dont see any worries i change mine every race it comes out barley greyish color my oil has never came out black or really dark brown.

Mobil1 makes a motorcycle oil but i dont see paying 10+ a quart for a bottle of oil as much as i change it that would be 1k+ a year in oil changes

I use Amsoil oil and the Yamaha filter from the dealership.

i just drained my oil and it sounds like i will probably going with the Rotella T 15W40 or whatever and a stock filter because this is my first oil change and i have just been running whatever comes from the factory in these so it sounds like i will go with the rotella t 15w40 for 11 bucks a gallon. cant go wrong there.

One question though, with the Rotella T 15W40 work fine with the new '09 YFZ-r's?

just checking cuz you guys are the experts and i am the beginner.

Thanks

id run it in a yfzr if i had one....they make rotella T 15w40 synthetic my buddy runs that in his 450r honda in the motor and regular in the tranny or may be the opposite but i knw he uses both just in diff compartments unlike yamaha is all one compartment together, with it being 11.00 per gallon you can afford to change it alot often than what other ppl do and can reuse the oil in something around the house like lawn equipment or etc. because the oil is still new after 1 race

yeh they have them but i buy the hiflo they are 4.95 and the oem yamaha filter is 10.95 or more. if you still have a warranty id use yamaha filter and oil until the warranty is over or atleast if u ever have to take it into the dealers for any warranty work just put a yamaha filter in it they cant tell what oil u use just say you put yamalube and oem filter in it so u dont screw up ur warranty

some dealers sale the hiflo and some do not, ebay or some sites prb have hiflo

honestly if it were me id do it myself and wouldnt tell them nothing about it..they dont know what your buying the oil for and 75% chance you wont have to take the bike in for a warranty repair if its properly maintained and taken care of for the first of its break in period. now if u rape the yapes out of it since day one and have a chance of blowing a top end before 6 months is over then id be concerned IMO warranties arent worth a penny cuz u cant modify any of the bike unless u pay a dealership to install the parts even if its a set of nerf bars. if id bought a brand new yfzR then id start takin off parts and adding parts day 1

Yeah that's what I'm just going to do.. Not worry about the dealer and just do it myself and not bother with the dealer. I can do it myself for cheaper, faster.. So why bother?

Haha thanks guys

alright guys, i just bought the rotella t 15w40 from wally world for like 11.50 and also i bought some fuel stabilizer to make sure my injectors dont clog while it sits this winter.. only problem,,,, i forgot to buy the oil filter!! i can get my oem oil filters for my YFZr for like 8 or 9 bucks too by the way..

I got a few questions because of this..
can i clean and reuse the oil filter just until i change it again?

also, can i put the oil in it without putting the filter in it first, or will it all just leak out when i go to install the new filter?

i figure that i cant do either of these, but it doesnt hurt to ask.. i just dont want to risk it.

thanks

when i change mine since its every race ill use the same filter 2x so ill change the filter ever 2nd time i change my oil.

you cant clean a paper type filter. they sale a re useable filter that u can clean.

i dont mind payin 4.95 for my filters but i wont pay more than 5 or 6 bucks a filter thats why im glad i found the hiflo.

you can change ur filter after u put the oil in because its higher on the motor than ur gears and you dont put a gallon in it anyways so you could go ahead and change the oil and wait and get a filter tomorrow just dont run it until u change filter or you can its your choice

Ok thanks man.. I'll probably just wait til Monday to change the oil..
I've only used this filter 1 time, but it was for the first 10 hours (maybe a little more, like 15) of break in time. Do you think that I could safely use it again even with all the little metal shavings etc. Stuck in it? Or should I not risk it?
Also, how often (hour wise) do you change your oil?

Thanks for all of the help man.. I appreciate it

if its that old wait and get a new filter dont run tha original one from factory.

i change mine more often than i should but i race my bike hard and ask it for all its got. i figure if i run it wide open everytime i run it then i should treat it with some new oil everytime. id say about my oil change has 30mins to 1 hr on it max.

if i trail rode and never raced it id prb change it every 2-3 rides with the rides being an estimate of 2-3 hrs long thats how long we use to ride on a trail ride but i was on a utility quad. since my yfz i havent trail rode any at all. some ppl ride on the roads alot atleast around here they do and alotta wide open up and down the road is like racing it IMO

if your a basic trail rider/riding around the house kinda guy then 4-6 hours would be good for an oil change and thats keeping it well maintained. also washing the bike after u ride it and keeping it clean will help it last a long time. example: my bike is 06 and its been rode alot and raced alot. im still on stock bearings but since this winter im rebuilding the whole bike top to bottom replacing everything but the wheel bearings and axle bearings. and if it werent for powder coating the swingarm and a arms i wouldnt had to replace the bushings and bearing in them. but i want it to be new again and not have to worry about breaking a balljoint or something in a race.

yeah man sounds good..
so i will get the oil filter replaced before i add any oil.. also, i do wash my bike (detail it all the way out) after every ride too. i like to take pride in my work, especially when it comes to my quad. so anyways i will start changing the oil probably after every ride or two, or between 5-8 hours of riding, whichever comes first. i will see if my dealer has the hiflo filters too.

i have ridden mostly trail riding and some mountain style riding but i will be starting to race too, but still mostly i will be riding trails more than i will be racing so i will have to remember to change it often.

Thanks again for all of the help

Honestly you should have changed your oil within the first hour of break-in.

yamaha_maniack
12-06-2009, 08:42 PM
yeah i dont know they just said 10 hours and not to do over half throttle on the first 5 hours and then the second 5 hours not to go over 3/4 throttle and then after 10 hours of total riding to take it in for a checkup thing and oil change or something. i just decided to not take it in and change the oil and clean the air filter myself... saves some money that way too.

The manual said not to change the oil for the first 10 hours during break-in? I wouldn't want my engine running for 10 hours with oil that is heavily contaminated with metal filings. The filter can only stop so much.

yamaha_maniack
12-08-2009, 10:50 PM
yeah that's what they told me.. They actually told me 10-20 hours so I thought there was no way that's right so I decided to change it at 10 hrs myself... You can see all of the little metal shavings and stuff in the bag that I am keeping the oil filter in right now... There are quite a few. Just glad it's there for sure.

I agree with you tho for sure.. I don't know if they are just trying to rip me off and get me to ruin my motor so that I will come to them to get a rebuild. If the Motor goes out any time soon then I'll be calling up yamaha and warrantying it cuz there would be no reason for it to to out so soon.. I doubt it would though..

I'll just have to come to the forums with help for now on cuz I don't think I should trust my local shop after this one... We will see.

Thanks again man

I take everything everyone says with a grain of salt until I can prove it.

Here's a good link to check out. http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=263415

Yeah that's just what they told me so I guess I should do the same as you.. Prove it before you try it..

And also I have been keeping up with that thread as well and it has helped me a bunch..

Thanks
