i'm looking to put a sound system in my f150. i want a decent set up but i have a $500 budget. what can i get?

What do you mean by setup? It depends on what you want.

Do you want...
Subs?
6.5's?
5.5's?
Tweeters?
Deck?
Amps?

What do you mean?

$500 budget isn't going to get you much. You can get that much in just the head unit easily.
Go to something like crutchfield.com and look at what they have, they give you good details on the products. I've never bought from there, but its a good place to start research. Or just go to the store (Best Buy, ABC Warehouse) so you can look at the actual stereo, speakers, etc. and hear them work and play with the head unit. You can get a fortune in a decent system. Good Luck.

If you let me know what you're looking for I would set you up with some links and such and keep you at a $500 budget. I need to know what you're looking for though.

I'd do an inexpensive deck with MP3, audio in and USB, then just do some aftermarket speakers that fit in the stock locations.;)

Dont forget a wiring kit and a box.

$500 is not much to work with. Id just go with a headunit and door speakers then when you get some more money get you some subs, amp, box, wiring and everything else you will need.

Also never cheap out on an amp.

What he said.

The thing with car audio is if you try to stretch $500 to cover an entire system, it's going to cost you more in the long run.

You'll buy cheap equipment and, likely grenade it in the first day.

$500 isn't a lot like they've stated. You could get a pretty decent system for around $1000. I've got $2300 in my truck. :p
