This in a nutshell. We can give back thousands of jobs if U.S. automakers make a big return. Limiting their competition would help this (of course japanese and german car makers would have to be limited also as they make a desirable vehicle for many). But this would be great for the economy.

Maybe argue that it costs too much to ship them to the U.S. on the giant cargo boats and that these boats use up tons of fuel (bad for environment)?

Less competition would allow the U.S. to explore other energy sources for cars (electric, hydrogen, etc...) without having to worry about losing market share to the rest of the car makers. They might be able to do this if they had more income, which they'd receive if more people bought american. This wold help make the U.S. "greener" in the long run.

Of course, you'd have to prove all of this through research but just some ideas to work from.
