View Full Version : my recent barn find and i need help from the experts

picked this up today.86 all stock except pipe.it hadnt been run scense 1990.it was stored indoors.cleaned the tank out petcock and replaced the lines.put my stock r carb on it[known good clean card it runs fine on my outher quad] it started in just 2 or 3 kicks runs good to 1/4 throttle then just dosent seem to rev any futher top speed is like 12mph.pulled the carb back off cleaned it which it didnt need no change.it does have a small amount of oil comming out the pipe joint at the head im not sure if it is unburnt 2 stroke oil or motor oil run it 10 minutes or so get maby a spoon full out there.supposedly had a new stator coil and cdi when parked.any ideas before i start throwing money at it i have no way to pressure test the motor.thanks for any advice i can get..

also wanted to add i pulled the reed cage and checked the reeds they look good and the cylinder and piston looked good it was not rusted or anything

Make sure the pipe is clear. Critters like to make homes in them when Quads sit for a long time. I got a used stock pipe from a guy that had been sitting for years. Put it on an R and it would hardly run. Found out a bunch of mice had packed it with all kinds of junk.

if you have another r swap out parts and try them but i would check for leaks in seals if it sat that long i best they are bad as well.. pull the left stator cover off and spray starting fluid behind the flywheel to the crank while its at idle if it starts to rev up that will tell you that the seal it gone on that side for sure.. aslo spray around base gasket and intake.. goodluck
if it sat for 20 years it will probably need a good rebuild.

will do i was thinking seals also just not sure i fully expect to have to do a rebuild but i was trying to see if possiable not to open the engine it has never been opened.

If pipe and air cleaner is all clean, could be the Classic CDI failure?

im with matt. Check the exhaust and make sure it is not plugged.
