Hello,
I have a 2002 Polaris Sportsman 500 with a bad engine. I brought it to a shop and the diagnosis was a broken connecting rod. Would this make the engine not start at all? I have tried to start it with the carb open and using starting fluid / new spark plug / etc and it will not start.
Any suggestions on how to really tell if it is a connecting rod?
Thanks in advance for any help!
-Mike
The connecting rod connects the piston to the crank. So no, it won't run:p If the connecting rod broke, you're looking at tearing the whole motor apart and replacing alot of stuff.

Like Scro said, the connecting rod connects the piston to the crankshaft. A broken connecting rod would mean the piston is stuck at a certain point in the cylinder and is no longer doing its job of compressing the fuel/air and harnessing the combustion.
Does the motor spin over a lot faster now with the starter? Almost like there's no resistance at all? If it does, then I would say the shop is right. If it still cranks over like it's getting compression, I'd say the shop is lying to you and it's time to find a different one.
