Anyone heard anything yet? Does anyone know when the 2010 rules update will be posted ?

Rumor has it the AMA is talking about lowering the minimum age to 15 for the 450 classes.

The new rules from the atva will should come out in Jan. The rule changes were voted on at congress in Oct. They have to approved by the board of directors when they meet in Las Vegas. The age was lowered to 15, but it still has to be approved.

Thats the way it should stay here in the states. At 15 most kids don't have the weight to handle impact from a 350 lb quad nor motor(mental) skills to react in a crash. Some of the parents will throw them kids on these things not knowing any better just as they put 10 years olds on pit vehicles and there will be injuries, not only to themselves but to other racers. There may be exceptions but the majority of 15 year olds from what I have seen should not be allowed. Hopefully ATVPG will make some wise decisions when approving them.

so untrue. There should be 15 450 stock class.

450 stock motors are plenty easy to handle and all the 15 year olds that ride aren't always small.

Im 15 and i can handle a 450 just fine(im 140lbs and about 5'9").

We also have a 300ex and that thing is a joke. I mean maybe in complete race form it's different, but the thing is so small(and JUST as heavy as my 450 FYI).

if i was still 15 i'd prly say that it should be changed.. but now i'm 16 and i can race my 450 this year!! lol

:p its not even that i want to race, i just think it should be lowered to 15.

I know there's kids out there that are riding/racing 450's that are 15, but cant race a legit league because of their age. It just sucks having to wait another year when you know you could be racing without any problems.

if they did impose the 15 y/o rule i do think there should be a height/weight ruling into it. aswell as a powerlimit(like i said earlier stock engine class)

My cousin races xc. he raced his yfz450 at a non ama event. Then he raced his new 300ex at our events which are ama. He was faster on the 300. He's as old as you, weighs more 160 at 5'11" and has ridden longer than most kids his age (since he was 4). He performed better on his 300. Its like riding a 150 four stroke compared to a 125/250f. YOu'll ride that 150 to its max, then you're ready for the jump. riding too big too soon doesn't do anyone any good.

Age has very little to do with maturity and size IMO. People in my high school had full beards and were balding in 9th grade. They routinely bought beer without being carded and could pass for 30 something years old. Then there's other people in their 20s who look 12 and could get beat up by teen girls.

I just remember being excluded from little league for my 2nd year because I was too old. The 13yr old rule was to keep kids who were too good out of a league meant for youngins. Or alcohol. I went through H.S. and college, nobody adhered to it. Age discrimination sucks. Its nothing but an arbitrary number picked by people feeling superior.

i think they should... i was racing a 450r in B class when i was 15. then moved up to A class on a 62hp yfz when i was 16. ive always been small for my age. prolly 120lbs when i was 15 haha. but i was always on bigger bikes/quads than other kids my age because what kids my age were riding wasnt fast enough for me.

I don't know where yall r from but here you can't tell a difference from 14-18 year olds. I think 15 is a good age as for them not having the mental part of racing ill have to disagree I don't think it could be that much different from 15 2 16 I think its either you have it or don't and if you don't you should be racing at national level

Motor skills by age....

Infant – none, hands are closed most of the time, can grip bar but can’t hold on so releases.... sucks thumb – good sign!

4-5 months – can grip bars, trial and error anything in site is worth a grab, would rather beat on the bars.

6 months – can hold on briefly, banging is still much more fun! Tries thumb throttle rather be back in mouth.

10 months – can grab both grips with thumb and index finger called “princer grip” poser for some..... show offs!

Toddler – can grip no prob, push throttle prefers twist. Still needs huggies!

School age – 5, grip bars, twist or push throttle, can’t touch pegs. no more diapers.

5-12 have eye hand coordination mastered can now eat with eating utensil, sweep, mop, dust, clean room, ride a bike with training wheels, race 50’s, 70’s, 90’s.

12-14 likes the opposite sex ut-o, hates to clean room and home work, wants to race 250’s and play video games all night.

15-16 can type on atvriders forums; think they can race big 450’s, maybe, maybe not.

17-18 – think mom and dad are complete doe doe birds and know nothing!!

18-22 chemical imbalance period of knowing everything and nothing all at once, maybe mom and dad aren’t such doe doe birds after all, should have listened to TNT and stay off those 450’s when I was 15.

:D

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

I agree, we are going to hurt some kids if they allow this to happen, I still think they should make a 250 mod class, like the dirt bikes have, use 250 four stroke bike motors in aftermarket frames. the quads are 100 lbs lighter, and cost about the same as a 450 to build. Some of the fastest riders in the country took this step, and I feel, avoided possible injury by going to big to fast.

What about weight requirements for 15 y.o

this was me at age 15. i could deffinatly handle it. at an heavy 135. oh yeah my first nat i had to race under a false name and i had plenty of buddys that did the same. but lets be real if your 15yo looks like a third grader the parent should know he cant handle it.

Me(was this past spring i think) at 15.

Like i said earlier, theyre should just be height and weight requirements.

Theres 15 year olds who look like they belong in the 6th grade, but theyres also 15 year olds who can pass a test to join the army. so it really shouldnt be age based IMO

Well I cant agree or diagree I have seen some 15 year olds that could ride the tires off a 450 but I have also seen some that had no business even being on a 450 let alone race one. My son is 15 and has been racing quads since he was in the second grade and been riding quads since he could walk good. He has made all the steps of progression I feel is necessary to compete on a 450 at 15 years old. He raced a 300ex this past seson at the national at 14 years old and did well but he also raced his 450 at the local events in the B class and also finished very well. He finished 1st at every race he was at and would have probably finished first for the series but we had to miss to many races because of the nationals. Point being he is plenty skilled at 14 to handle a 450 but that dosent mean all 14 year olds are. I would rather see it stay at 16 years old because you will have more skilled riders when they have to compete at a national level on the 450. Most of the riders that race the 300's at the national race on a 450 at thee local races but it makes them very fast on there 300's at the nationals and when they turn 16 they will have plenty of skill to be able to compete on a high level at the nationals. Heck just an example the top rider in the school boy jr. class this past season turned 16 and will be moving to a 450 for 2010 in the A and Pro Am class and will compete. That is what I am talking about skill. Was he skilled enough at 15 yes but think how much more skill he has now that he stayed on the 300 for one more season before banging with the older boys in the 450 classes. I vote to leave it at 16. Just my 2 cents

Agree, but we got a different testimony. Not knowing any better at 15, 2004, went to a sales person(big mistake), of course like the rest of the 15 yr olds boasting about their abilities on the thread, my son wanted the new “race ready” yam, hon was not out yet……he just wanted to be fast. I had no knowledge of quads or racing so purchased a 450 based on the sales person recommendation, who had no knowledge of racing quads either.

So there we go to the local c-class, first year seen ER several times from flipping over the bars, having a quad run over a 140lb, 5’11 kid……Looking back the 450 was a mistake, should have started on a 200-300.

I don’t think anyone is doubting (as I stated before) that some 15 year olds have the motor skills to react in the crash and ability to ride 450’s. That’s not the issue, it’s the parents like me(back in 2004) that have no clue that will throw their kid that just bought a brand new 450 on the track with you. Also the inflx into the other more advanced 450 classes. Yes there could be a test, but does ATVPG want to be involved in taking the time to administer it? It be a pretty hard test to set up, one that test not only riding abilities but reaction time in a crash situation. Yes you can argue that some 20 have less motor skills to react in the situation, but if you look at statistics the average 15 year brain is not as developed as the 16-17-18. My concern is how low will they go if this trend keeps up? , next season will it be 14? then 13? then 12?

mamaknothead
11-28-2009, 07:56 AM
I agree, to administer this on a case by case would be impossible. The only way my son has the skill to ride/race his 450 is because he has race from a TRX90 to a 90 Mod to a 300ex and then to a 450r over a 8 year period. As for the younger kids jumping on a 450 when they are first starting out. This happen all the time and I have seen it time after time. They will race 2 maybe 3 year tops usually and the parents will pull the plug because they have crashed to many times and had to spend to many nights at the hospital. So they sale it all and we loose another rider from the sport. Parents are just as much to blame as the kids . The parents will go buy the 450 to avoid spending the money on a 300 that they will only ride for a few years. They think why waste the money on this 300 we should just go ahead and buy the 450. He wont ride it no fast than he or she can handle. Right??? seen it happen alot. Parents have to be the ones to make th e right choice on this one. If you dont know then talk to another racing parent not a sales man that is trying to make a sale.

Not saying its right but there are alot of 13/14/15 yearolds
riding 450s or bigger. They just might not be racing them. Some of these are the parents that don't think there kid will get hurt not knowing they are racing threw the woods at 50 mph with no helmets on. I think they should leave the age at 16.

mamaknothead
11-28-2009, 08:01 AM
Parents have to be real. If the quad will go fast the kids will make it go fast. How many times as a kid did you do what you parents said to do while they were standing there? Then when they walked off or you got out of there sight you did exactly what they told you not to do.
