I have 2005 400 ex. It never gets run too hard, mostly take it out to play and probably a couple of full throttle runs.

It runs fine, pulls strong, no popping etc. Should I adjust the valves?

If so I installed a Sparks Key, so the TDC mark will be off. Should I turn the motor until the valves are all loose? :)

hey man service manual says every 100 hours. You can tell your on the compression stroke when all 4 of your valves have a little slack. Don't necessarily have to line up with the line as long as the valves have slack you can adjust. .004 inches for intake and .005 for exhaust for stock came specs.

i would say that every 100 would be good, i do mine about once a year or if i start hearing it get a bit loud. I have only had to adjust them once since my rebuild and never had to before that. I just make sure they are good though once a year. Steve

if you install the sparks key do you time it 6 degrees before TDC and if so how does one check this easily?

you turn the fly wheel to the left so that would move the timing forward to have it closer to top dead center i believe. you could do it right before you put the key in and then it should be good for quite a while. if anything you could mark the flywheel at tdc with the key in it also to check it easily. steve
