i think it has somethin to do w/ the fact that the xr has one 4 inch wheel being driven, the 400ex has 2 11 inch tires bein driven. the different cam also has a small effect

Gear ratios and the cam are different. A lot of guys use a HRC XR grind cam in their 400EXs with good results.

also it has a 6 speed tranny which gives it top end............

I know the XR is a lot faster because of it being a light dirt bike, But the actual output of the engine itself; It has more actual horsepower. does it have a bigger carb or different gaskets?

More important than how much horsepower the motor makes, i believe the trx has a beffer transmission gears and of course different ratios which we all know.

I have a 2000 xr400 and a 2003 400ex. The power is the approx. 3 to 5 horsepower more with the xr and is geared higher. Stock sprockets are 15/45. The biggest difference is the starting. In cold weather it can take 15 kicks with the decompression lever pulled and then a couple of full kicks to start it. Powerwise the xr can be used at lower rpms and then due to the lower weight and rolling resistance you can accelerate much quicker.

retarted ignition timing, heavier duty gears with closer gear ratio's. I think the clutch runs a extra plate, thicker cases, differant cam for better reliability and I think thats most of the major stuff.

the XR has a different cam, slightly higher compression, and kicks start (and also a different carb I believe)..

the EX has different gear ratios, and the tranny was beefed up..

When you start your XR in the cold, lean it over on its side until gas starts to run out of the vent tubes. Then pick it up and give it the normal drill. It will start easier! It works the same way with the XR600s.

Hmm. Sure would be nice to have a kickstart 400EX.. If it wasn't such a pain to get cranked.

ive had both kick and elec, i dont mind either one, but when it comes down to reliability... im goin with kick

Winter time kick starts better, it takes a good 3-5 kicks.

But the electric start also takes a good couple cranks to get going.

It really doesnt matter it all takes the same time to start it, its just which takes more energy, ur thumb moving 2 cm or kick ur leg down 16 inches.

Nice thing about kick start is you dont have to worry about ur battery dying, u just have to wory that the SOB dont fall off!
