i was wondering about that, whats the best way to clean it? ive soaked it with simple green and washed it with a hose still didnt clean the stains off

Toadz400

I'm not sure if an engine degreaser would be harmful to the radiator or not. Otherwise I would keep soaking it with simple green and use a very soft tooth brush to clean it up. Just make sure to go with the fins and not against them otherwise you'll bend them.

Use an etching aluminum/mag wheel cleaner. Thats what I did w/ my radiator. Does a very good job!

MMMMMMM....I love winter rebuilds.

I did my YFZ last winter and it took a bit longer then I would've liked. But after I got it all buttoned up, the end result was very rewarding.

Good luck with yours and keep us posted...I love Gibson!!!

4. gibsons bearings cant get the clips out to take the bearings out. (buying new clips)
5. need new delron bushing for aarms (ordered)

me2, they are directionals because they can be soft compound or hard compound, if you look at the tread they have a support or idk what you would call it so the tread wont flex in that direction and u can turn them around and they will flex if ran in opposite direction, wierd but kool ideal

11-27-2009, 05:38 PM
yea i noticed there pretty cheep maybe looking at getting a set to go on my stock 450r wheels for trail tires.and yea i see the supports on them. that is a good idea i didnt notice that until you pointed it out..

thanks. UPDATE 12/3/09 bought some all balls bearings for the steering stem and they did not fit so thats a heads up for future refs. they were 1-2mm bigger around than the stock bearing that came outta my old frame so i just used the old bearing and new seals.

Mod Quad anodized red axle nut (it was new and cheap so had to take red lol)
new 07 SE seat all black
new 08 stock swinger
galfer ss +2 front lines
streamline billet front line clamps
gibson spherical bearings and clips
new rezzy mounts and clamps for the shocks

Looks good so far man!

I forgot to mention, 1 of the many things I also learned about Gibson stuff is that HRE ATV actually fabricated ALOT of the Gibson stuff and Dave Gibson put his name on it and sold it as a "Gibson" part.

I know that HRE ATV does ALOT of Herrmann Racing stuff also and the upper a-arms of the Herrmann and Gibson's look very similar.....In fact I'm willing to believe that the 2 brands share the same geometry.

Having said that, you might want to get in contact with HRE ATV and talk to someone down there. The fab ALOT of Gibson, Herrmann and Burgard stuff to name a few and they might be able to repair that a-arm or have something to sell you..Click the link below......

hey man having said that i have been looking around the net and google alot for some threaded bungs like the gibson uppers have welded into them for the heims.

i have found alot and as soon as i find out wat size the heim is and the threads i will prb be able to buy the exact same bung that mr gibson uses.

i called east coast today and they dont have anything used. they said a new are will run me 190+ shipping. also to fix my arm would be around that same price because they gotta cut my arm apart and put a new bung in it and all that.

stuff like this really sucks esp when i planned on having my bike together awhile ago.:ermm:

I hear ya man, especiallly the down time you had waiting on the beautiful PC work...

It sounds like you're headed down the right path, although I think them charging you that much to repair the arm is BS!!!

Maybe this HRE ATV place can put a new Bung in it for cheaper...

Either way, good luck!

thanks man, you build way better looking bikes than me lol you need to post some pics up of both bikes u have now.

i found a piece almost identical to the one gibson uses on ebay for around 10 dollars. if the threads will be the same then i will get it and have it tig welded. then just sending it back out to get coated i should be set for way less than 200 dollars

thanks for the advice and help

Thanks for the props man..I've entered that build for the QOTM contest around here and I'm very thankful for the votes I got those times, but it seems like members of this site are determined not to let a Yamaha win....I even race my bike HARD also and post pics, but it's still not good enough LOL...

I REALLY like your color scheme though and I'll always be a HUGE Gibson fan so I can't wait to see your finished product!

$10 plus a little TIG weld is a steal compared to what ECA wants :eek2: . It's nice to learn these things when someone does the research because there are plenty of aftermarket companies that use this "Bung" design...

yea yamaha dosent get much respect anymore.

thanks for the comments on my bike. i like the yellow plastics because its different and its alot less likely to match someone with yellow unlike blue and white. i wish i had a better camera and bigger garage so my build would appear in better quality.

thanks

Think about what you posted lol...... if a front end as a whole is +2 that divided by 2=1 so one arm will be +1 by itself.:D

lol, you hit the nail on the head on that. been following this thread since you started it and i wouldn't start bickerin in it, but you have a sweet build going on man. its got the wheels in my head turning for mine. o i've been wondering why'd you keep the subframe stock silver? looks good, keep posting those pics!

well i was going to PC the subframe candy blue or black but with all the little things popping up like having to spend money towards new this and new that because something breaks or something happens you cant avoid. also with the plastic on the bike u really cant see the subframe so 80% of people will never notice it,

thanks for keeping posted i wish i could do more to it more often like planned. i ordered new heim end and new delron bushings for the lowers since the ones i just bought wouldnt fit. as soon as they arrive ill be puttin the front end together and just be missing the right upper arm.

ironically...when you said that you tried to contact the seller from ebay about the gibson a arm... i see the seller is from east coast atv.

Hence, call east coast atv about the a arm and find out first hand if it will work and save yourself some cash out of your tight budget.

Dont call the kettle black when someone tries to help you out from now on.

Did you ask to speak with the internet salesman ECADAVE when you called east coast?

Im saying you may have been given a bull***** answer from somebody who just answers phones and looks up parts.

Obviously they have some used a arms.

My advice is to call ECA when you are looking at the webpage of there ebay auction.

When they tell you " We dont sell any used gibson a arms" ask to talk to someone else... Clearly they do.

I have no problem with anyone trying to save a dollar.

i guess im goin to spend 10-15 bucks and try a repair. if all else fails ill prb continue looking for an arm or buy a new one for 190

well been working on the bike some today. got the rear end about done. but the snap ring for the bearing carrier isnt going into the groove. idk if its the new carrier since i previously had the stocker on it.

i was trying to put the lower arms on and the arms wont fit into the frame its almost 1/4 inch off ive beat and beat and tryed everything to get them to go in and nothing works. the new delron bushings from K&K came today and i believe they are too thick and im goin to try to trim them down some to see if i can get either the front or back side to go into the frame.

mxpimp2000
01-09-2010, 01:21 AM
ok i trimed the bushings down and finally beat and beat enough to get the arms to fit into the frame..not exactly wat i wanted to have to do. i did put some chips on the frame and arms while this process was being done. i love gibson arms but i swear i hate how crappy they fit. very very very poor accuracy when welding these together. they need a new jig or something because they shouldnt been that far off. because if u lined up one mount then the other was no where near the mount in the frame. even after i trimed the bushings i still had to beat the hell out of them. not to mention after i got them installed and tightend them up u cant raise the arms up and down by hand like it has a shock on it. WTF??? i even mounted a tire and it would hole the tire off the ground no problem. i have to hold the bike from falling off the stand just to move the arm like i need it:confused:

oh and while ur at it u should eliminate the black oil box and the coolant over flow tank. really creates a nice clean look having nothing hanging off the subframe. i did mine and it was extremeley easy and doesnt hurt anything. ran it on a built motor ran all last season having the lines ran to the ground i could post pictures on how i did my set up. i did mine based off a couple mebers on y f z central

ya, it cleans it up and shaves weight in the process. i ran my coolant over flow line down the frame and my breather hoses to the air box and used a small breather filter.. did you use a filter on yours or just open?

i ran a breather for awhile but it kept getting all nasty and ross looking so i did some research and found i could just run them open so thats what im currently doing

i removed that black box back in 08. i wanted to keep my overflow tank because my bike will use that coolant when im on the track but sometimes it wont. i wanna be as careful as i can.

as of this second my motor is wiseco. ive not gotten to breaking down the topend for the sparks piston yet. i went ahead and put the sparks piston on my mods list cuz it will be done when bike is complete.

well started to work on it again today and well....more of the bad luck came along. so my bike will prb be sitting around this time next year when i can afford to finish it.

the snap ring for the brake stay popped off so i started taking it back apart. the new axle nut wouldnt come off. and when id put it on it went on like a charm sooo easy and smooth. well it didnt come off that way. it wasnt even tight just hand tight. now the axle nut and LSR axle is no good. threads are shot on both.

any ideas on how to break an axle?

Man I must have missed that you were using a billet axle nut. I would have warned you about this problem.

I ran an LSR nut that I paid about $60 for and it last about 3 months before the threads stripped out on it. There's actually a way to lossen them up that these vendors don't advise. I scraped it and just went with the trusty OEM nut.

Sucks that your axle got ruined man. Seems like one thing after another. I can't believe that billet ruined the threads on that axle...

BTW...Gibson did make a-arms for XC for a short period and I believe those arms are for an XC front end.

man u aint kidding it is something right after another.....im not real sure if my axle is ruined yet...there seems to be aluminum deposits in the first round of threads so i cant get my stock steel nut to thread on..ive used a wire brush/wheel with a drill and it wont come out...i dont want to ruin the axle if all possible id like to see if i could fix it and get the aluminum junk out...

i had a problem with lonestar billet to. but with me it was there billet rear hubs. I was at the track with my yfz and when id gas it it would pull to one side i was like hmmm pulled off the track. i put my yfz in the air spun the one rear tire and saw the hub just spinning on the axle. what happened was the soft billet on the hub splines i guess couldnt handle the power and torque from the axles harder splines and stripped them out.. needless to say i went back to stock rear hubs.

If you can get one end of the aluminum, it may unravel off of the axle threads as on long strand.

The only billet item I'm running that has to do with the drive system is a billet LSR sprocket hub and I' really surprised it's held up.

Check your snapring for bends- lay it on a 100% flat surface and see if it lays flat.

Check for knicks and burrs in the metal with your fingers.

Sand/file them down.

IF that dont work rotate the carrier during HAND wirebrushing it- power wirebrushing will rip apart the aluminum.

I love RATH stuff man, it a good quility.

Have you heard about the new "Fourty-Fours" Pro nerfs that are coming out soon?

They are pretty badass. Wienen and Upperman have beening doing R&D with them at the DWT MX series. If you can go to RATH'S Facebook page, they are posted there.

They are a one piece nerfand heal combo like those pro armors.

Your setup will be good, but the hi-flow piston is a REALLY nice addition. Where you feel the difference the most is in the choppy/rough sections of the track/trail. I do not have the high flow piston, but have ridden a quad that did and its definately smoother in the chop. When you get the cash it will be money well spent. ;)
